My garage door opener just went south with a terrible grinding noise and white plastic shavings on top of my Hellcat. Probably is as old as my house. Old Sears 1/2 HP. Early 80’s vintage. Anyone know any good ones. I don’t want anything to thick. I have only an 8 foot ceiling and a big one may limit how high I can jack a car. Thanks in advance.
I don’t have much more than two foot clearance now. Only issue I have with new ones is you can’t run out under them. I consider that a test of my youth. When I can’t make it anymore I figure I am done. I guess I will have to give that up?
There's a solution for the sensors. Just mount them up by the motor facing each other. No extra wiring or ANYTHING. Back to the normal car stuff.
You may want to consider a "jack-shaft" opener. Attaches at the metal shaft the tension spring is wrapped around. Zero issue with ceiling clearance.
With only an 8’ ceiling it has a tight radius on the tracks which they call a low headroom kit. This puts a lot of stress on the opener and door. The bigger the radius the better. It looks like the opener hangs down about a foot or so off the ceiling? You might be able to put a higher lift track in there to get the opener and tracks closer to the ceiling?
You could always try to put new plastic gears in it if the motor is still good. Bout 20 years ago, I fixed my old mans garage door opener. The gears were all shredded. However, not sure if they sell parts like that anymore.
Just got this one for mine. DC motor with battery back up and belt drive is the ultimate system. https://gatehousesupplies.com/liftm...MI-frY3rTl4gIVDJyzCh0_uAqnEAQYAiABEgLMPfD_BwE If you get the sealed bearing, composite rollers, with the proper adjustment of the tracks and lubrication of the springs, and sheves, the door will be almost undetectably silent.
I changed the plastic gears in mine afew years ago. X2 on mounting the sensors on the motor.works great
Dave just get your wife to leave in the morning in a rush. Mine did i got 2 new garage doors. And the ford explorer did not get damaged. She blew them doors right off!
Yes the best. Had sears forever. then switched. cadillac. Pittbulls Don’t bark when door opens. niiiice.
I’ve got a Chamberlain belt drive with battery backup. Quiet, smooth operation that works in a power failure. Very happy with it since installing it 6 years ago.
Yea, didn't notice that before. Probably be worth it over the long run. I really don't care for extension springs since I had one once go through the wall when it let go. Broke right through the safety cable.
I put a Chamberlain 1 1/4 HP belt drive in with 3100 Lumens LED light. It also has built in WiFi so I can open it with a smart phone if I want to let someone in. Also has battery backup
