    Garage advice

First of all, thanks for all the compliments at Quaker BPG (except for the one person who said it didn't belong there) on JAGUICK.
Best run was 10.36 128 with a 1.36 60 ft with a mule motor that was hanging around the garage......more to come.

Anyway, I'm in the process of building a 5 car garage and it's the first time going thru this so I need advice from those who have.....

Questions like ceiling or no ceiling and if a ceiling is steel(w/insulation) OK to save some $$$. Or drywall?

Disadvantages of no ceiling? No storage in rafters....

My concern is I'll never be able to heat it at all w/o a ceiling.

Consider heating the floor with hot water from a boiler. The heat doesn't rise like a normally heated area would and the concrete acts like a big heat sink so the temp doesn't fluctuate much.

Also, build it bigger than you think you need!!!!!

in the town where i live they have a height restriction on accessory buildings so in order to have ample height for a lift and not be too high overall, i went with scissor trusses (cathedral)
ceiling on the inside. you lose the storage but gain headroom
i went with white metal on the walls (cheaper than OSB and easier to clean) and drywall for the ceiling.
floor heat is great but initial cost is about double what you can get a good 90+ furnace for.and you have to be thinking ahead and put the lines in befoer you pour the slab.
I would definately consider floor heat if your budget allows.
and ceiling fans to keep the heat down where ya need it.

Toilet, utility sink, FRIDGE, and a separate room for your compressor (mine's in the bathroom). It's a pain wandering in the house for bodily functions, removing shoes and NOT sitting down on the furniture while in grubbies. Much easier to preserve your marriage.

Too late to "preserve" the marriage, I can sit whereever I want.

Hey JAGUICK would never have been conceived while married.

Cube frig for beer, a bucket for waste and a water cooler for handwashing and I'm all set.....

Anyone have a steel ceiling?....seems a bit odd.

    Bruce,

I did what Larry did and went with a scissor truss so I would have room for a lift, but........I only used the scissor trusses in one bay (12 feet). Next to the scissor trusses I placed one gable truss and then switched to a storage truss for the last 24 feet. Also consider increasing the roof pitch to gain some extra height. I have 6'-6" clear in the middle of my storage room upstairs, it's 24'x12'.

    good luck

P.S. The Jag was really cool, sorry I didn't get the chance to come over and meet you, I was just a couple of pits over with the cream colored 69 with the black top.

I would recomend over building the electrical system, 120, 240, 480. Plenty of outlets on several breakers. Lots and lots of lighting, possibly even put some on the walls.

Put the windows as high as you can to keep prying eyes from looking in.

    And most important, High security.

    - a center floor drain with catch basin in floor , if it is legal in your locale
    - plenty of light
    - compressed air recepticles at various locations on the walls.
    - if u intend on washing anything in the garage , u want steel on the walls .
    - my dad's shed is all steel ontside inside , roof & ceiling . the walls are 6" & insulated ; 12" in the ceiling . also has large variable speed electric ceiling fans .

How about a signed agreement with the wife that no matter what happens. You get to keep the garage and all the toys in it?

    There you go.....
I made it big enough so I can move into it and rent the house out.

How bout a hot tub in the garage....naw too much humidity.....

a hottube / parts washer would be ok. Drop a engine in the hot tub and add a bottle of laundry soap. Kick up the heater and water jet and wait.

Hey Bruce - are you doing it yourself or having it contracted? I've got a 5+ car garage I built. Couple of thoughts:

I did the scissors too for a lift, although I did the back of the garage all the way across and used standard trusses for the front for storage.

I do not have insulation or a ceiling. Makes it easy to add shelves or attach to the framing. I can heat the place but it takes a lot of BTUs. I use a torpedo heater when I need to. Luckily we don't live in the north! But an alternative I will likely implement is to wall off a bay for winter work and only heat that space.

A full bath with shower and toilet is nice, many of my friends have added those.

Heat in the floor is great too.

You can't have enough space, power, or light. Wiring for a network may be useful if you are into that.

    good luck! - Bill

Yeah Bill, I built a 10 x 12 "office" to heat for winter work....engines etc

BTW thanks for the compliments on the JAGUICK....at least I know one person voted fot it in the show.....not that it belonged there....:Dou:
I'm getting ready to change the rear springs...they are way too stiff....the chassis guy selected them before he knew what it was going to weigh, ended up 400 lbs lighter than he thought.....maybe next time out it will be a "leaper".

I agree on wiring for a network...how else can you browse V8Buick.com in the garage? Unless you go wireless?
