jeff bullock Dare to be different !!!

Just found out today from Year One, that there is a difference between the 68-70 pumps and the 71-80 pumps. The difference is in the "snout" .I guess the older pumps have the shorter snout and the newer ones have the longer snout.Just so everyone doesn't have to go through all the trouble I did when trying to find a new one. Also , it seems these little buggers are getting popular.I had to go to 3 different stores before I finally tracked one down and they had to get it from the warehouse, where they only had one left on the shelf!Man, I'm starting to think maybe I should stock up on a few of these for "just such an emergency".Thanks for the insight "Foghorn Leghorn" Any way just thought I would warn people.Maybe it's different where your at?:Do No:

Same situation round here. Autozone can't even order it. Pep boys had no luck. Advanced auto had it next day. Remanufactured of coarse...
How much is the difference in the length of the snout?

  3. So, I wonder which one would go on my 68 GS, that has a 71 350 block in it... Short snout, long snout...any dimensions given for each? BTW, thanks for digging into this! :TU:

I don't think so Nate. The pulley should be the same just a different snout length.Fan clutch will also be the same.Just need to make sure if the clutch is a thermal or non-thermal.The thermal has the spring in the middle.:TU: Jeff B.

I believe the long snout is for cars with ac. Of course when I order mine the parts book did not list a 70 GS with ac.....oh boy!

The long snout water pump used a deeper pulley...They were used on the later 350's and the 3.8 V6s...The 300 V8s used the short snout water pump and used the shallower pulley...The deep snout pulley won't work on the short snout water pump...

Easy way to make sure you get the short snout water pump is to use the 64-7 300 V8 as the source...

I am in the process of changing my water pump (same 'ol broken bolt story) ... the one they gave me looks identical to the one that was on there, only its cleaner and when you spin the shaft it doesn't make a ton of noise  Finding one was easy for me, but they did have to order it from a bigger store/warehouse combo. They've had to do that with everything other than the distributor I've gotten from them, though.

All my water pumps come from CarQuest. They ALWAYS have the parts I need. If they don't have it then, they get it to me within 24 hours.:TU:

I ordered it at 7pm and had it by 8am the next morning... just had to go pick it up. Their deliveries get there at 3am. This was Advance Auto (Parts America Affiliate)
