hi gang, i wonder if anybody has any ideas. i burned up an axle bearing on my 1987 dodge 3/4 ton truck with what i think is a spicer 60 axle.

when i pulled the brake drum, i found that the inner wheel bearing was shot, it came out in pieces. so, i have to get the inner race off of the housing, and its flush against the housing, so i cant get behind it to pull it. ( the race is on the outside of the housing. ) i tried a cold chisel, and the chisel just breaks up. ( i may need a better quality chisel. ) when dring the truck, it got pretty hot, but not hot enought to smoke. ( drove about five miles that day, and caught the problem fast. ) i am reluctant to use heat, concerned about a grease fire. i cant really get at it very good with a cut-off wheel either, and i'm concerned about cutting into the housing if i go too far.

anyone have any ideas on how i can get this race off the housing ?

my computer is down right now, so i will check back here in a day or two. thank you, henry

    carbide burr?

what about a carbide burr in your die grinder?
That bearing race is gonna be some hard material.
Its gonna make a mess of metal chips and you are going to wipe out a couple of burrs but you might be able to grind away two opposite spots and take it out in halves.
    maybe..
Or if theres enough on the inner diameter to grab with the edge of a bolt head you could get a el cheapo little slide hammer and thread just a bolt in the end and catch the race it on the inside edge.
    Just some thoughts.

    we got it

thank you tom. we got it off there. wow, what a hassle, we took the 4" cut off wheel, and just kept cutting one spot on the race, then chisel it some, then more cutting, finally got it to turn a lil, then cracked the weak spot, and got some channel grips on it and were able to pull it off there. it put up a fight but we got it. hope i can find a new bearing at a reasonable price, my mopar parts book doesnt list the bearing or the seal. thats odd, the parts most likely to be replaced arent in the book. oh well. thanks again tom.

good job gettin that guy outta there.
For the replacement, have you looked at www.rockauto.com
Under your year truck, in the brakes/wheel hub section they list spicer 60 inners and outer bearings..
The prices are good, but if you're buying anything with some weight to it like drums, the shipping is a bit high.
Also what you can get from the website is the vendor part number for your local parts guy to cross refrence..
