Hi Guys, I am starting to restore my 71 Riv, and we were looking at the louvers on the trunk lid and wondering the exact functionality of them. I did some searches on here, and Google, but didn't come up with a definitive answer on how the system works. Here's what is in my mind: The blower fan is always running, circulating air in the cabin, exiting through the rear window to the trunk, and OUT the rear vents to create the Flow through design. Is this correct? If there is a thread on this, sorry I couldn't find it. Thanks for looking! Turk.
Yup. You got it right. I remember the commercials, advertising how that the smoking passenger's evil stench left the car, complete with video showing the smoke flow. Smoke in my car, you get the cherry in your mouth at high speed!
Thinking 66-67 was the first yr for this. My 68 has the luvers below the back window but the only actual function of them that Ive been able to prove is water drainage. had the passenger compartment completely tore down several times and there is no way for air to leave the compartment and enter where the louvers are.Even had the louvered panel off the car at one point. It is a sealed compartment except for the drain holes at each side.
My recollection of the introduction of this technology is 1971, so I don't know about earlier vehicles.
Perfect, thanks for that. My grandmother was always smoking with the windows up. Not in the Buick, but her mercury comet. I swore to never do that. It was gag inducing!
