OK, I know this is dumb but I had seen an article about these divises in the 80's. It was rather interesting and it seems very similar to what is being offered to buy over the internet now. The only thing I seem to recall that was different was that the unit around the fuel line also required a slight amount of power to give some warmth to the unit. Now the question......... Has anyone ever actually tried one of the units? With our higher costs in gas our gas bill runs about $375-400 a month. At $80 yes that is far more then they are worth because they probably pay about $7 for them but.... If it made enough actual difference......

Let me know if you have ever tried them and feel free to e-mail personally if you do not want to post it.

I tired a search on the site before but only saw a single thread related.

    ....

ive never tried one but last week while on vacation a guy tried to sell me one, said he had it on his 91 buick and it made a big difference. wanted over $200 for the unit tho. im still pretty skeptical about the whole thing myself ( supposed to improve fuel mileage and performance by using magnets around the fuel line, allows better fuel atomization ...wha wha?)
what got me about it was that he said sometimes the fuel molecules are clumped together, and the magnets help seperate them. wouldnt there be a gel type consistency to the gas then?
i would like to think it works, but would need way more evidence than what i hear.... would be great if it actually worked tho

Its all a bunch of b.s., wrapped in quasi-scientific mumbo-jumbo to make it sound like it works. "Complete Fu**ing Idiocy" is probably a good summation.

I mean, think about this logically --do you really think that if the magnet aligned something or organized it in the fuel it would stay that way even 1/10th of a second later? Or as it gets atomized in your carb?

And if it did work, how come every one of em has a different explanation for how there product works?

The FTC, by the way, is all over the internet scammers telling them to cease and desist. But its hard to keep up with the scammers, and even if you shut one down they open up somewhere else.

No different than the magnetized CD's you are supposed to put in you washing machine to make your clothes come out whiter with less soap. the latest improvement was the "stereo washing machine CD", which i guess is better than the original mono units.

anyways , im sure your right. thers no way a simple magnet could do much of anything in the fuel department exept decrease your wallet, just another case of too good to be true... well good for them anyways

    Well

I am pretty much figuring that is the case but if someone has actually bought one and it actually worked then well, it may be worth a try.

As I recall the one in the 80's was done with heating platinum so I would have thought that platinum plugs would have that effect and they don't so.........

But hey, if it was never asked people wold still wonder right?

Hmmmmm---I think the only evidence you need is the fact that the guy was trying to sell it to you --all the while telling you how great it worked on his car.

They used to sell those things in the Harbor Freight tools catalog for $10. I added one to an order once to get the extra $5 I needed to get free shipping. Figured I wouldn't be out much when it didn't work. Never did install it. All it amounts to is two magnets held in place with cable ties. There was no power feed for that one.

Come to think of it, I just got a new catalog from them yesterday. I'll check if they're still in there for that price. At $10 its worth trying. $200? No way.

You're missing the point. It just don't work. Won't do a ****** thing.

It's like chain letters -- "gee it's only $2. And I might make $10,000!". No you won't. You won't make diddley. You'll just lose $2. But that's the psychology they rely on.

At 10 bucks for the magnet jobby, no, no, no, it's not worth a try. If it is $0.01 or more, its a waste of money.

Hey, for $5.00 I'll put a spell on your car to make it run better. Don't even need to come there -- i can do it from here. Oh , your friends may say that sounds ridiculous, but its only $5 and who knows, it just may work.

Paypal or Money Order preferred. Checks take two weeks to clear before spell is cast.

    Well

I hesitate to relate this experiance at the risk of being labled an idiot, but what the heck.
About 10 yrs. ago, my boss ( Municipal garage) came to me with a product that a vendor was trying to sell the township. He opens the box and shows me this tube with a magnet thing encasing it. It had one wire that went to ground and was supposed to increase fuel mileage and cut emissions.
I responded the same way most here have with" You've GOT to be kidding me, that's impossible and how can you be so gullable".
My boss said he hadn't paid for this piece and wanted me to try tapping it into the fuel line anyway. I figured, what the heck, I'm gettin paid and I'll show my boss how stupid he is for even considering this contraption.
Well, I brought a V-8 Caprice into the garage, warmed it up and got a baseline emission setting.I installed it and hooked our Bear 4-gas emission tester up again. The readings I got were approx. half what the baseline was! I figured I had inadvertantly changed something else and not realized it so I removed the "Magnet/tube" only to see the emission reading return to baseline! Now let me say right now,NOBODY wanted to see this thing exposed as a hoax as much as me so I reinstalled it and took another reading.Back down to half again.
I stood there scratching my head and was left dumbfounded. I left it on my bosses car to see what happened to mileage, but he was never really concerned with mileage( his gas was paid for by the township) so he never followed up with any real testing other than telling me he thought mileage was up( I told you he was an idiot).
We never bought any of those things, but I wish I had got ahold of one just to play with........:Do No: Please don't flame me as I don't endorse these "Snake Oil" contraptions, but it was quite wierd to see it with my own eyes.

Yep, still in their new catalog. The word must be out on what the scammers are getting. The price went up to $15.99. heehee

"11.6% average highway fuel savings as tested by a U.S. EPA accepted laboratory" ... and we all know the government would never lie to us, don't we? ROFL - oh, I crack me up sometimes...

Since I've never been one to be afraid of embarassing myself, I'll play scientist. I have a 92 GS that I've tracked the mileage on every fill up since I bought it a year ago. Overall, the mileage sucks for a 3.8 (13.6/24.7) so it could use the help. I'll strap the thing on tomorrow, fill it up & we'll see what happens.

The piece I installed actually replaced a small section of fuel line and the fuel flowed through it. It was for a carburated application....:Do No:

    Hmmm

Thanks, let me know what you see if anything (since you have one already). Who knows, maybe it will turn out like one of those other methods I heard about a long time ago. That one was you take a jug of water and place an airator (like an air stone for aquariums) in the intake of the carborator you will get better mileage and performance....... RIGHT!!!! Just add water and moisture to your engine! Just what I want to do....

I would be thrilled with getting 15 MPG right now. so it sounds like you are doing good! I did just get the new cat converter in Tuesday night but I have not driven that one too much this week. I hope to see an improvement in it from that. Weird though, the old until was over a foot long with short pipes on both ends. This one the unit is only about 6 inches long with pipe to make up the difference. I really gave serious consideration to just using pipe but.........

Sorry guys, can't find it. I don't remember throwing it out, but if I ran across it in a serious clean-out frame of mind I may have. I'll be doing a serious clean-up & reorg of the garage again soon. If I run across it I'll post about it.

OK, well I found the one similar to the one I saw 20 or so years ago! It is at http://www.madeinit.com/gaici/starfire/starfireen.htm but be forwarned when you open the site there is a site that opens behind that has some various interesting information on it. I guess that is a pretty GOOD insite as to the ability of the units!

for the sake of cureosity , id probly pick one up if i came across it for a cheap price (flea market, etc) but the whole running 12v power to my fuel line thing is a little scary. (unless i misread that part)
