    60 401 nailhead.

Came home to find the car running rough. A look under the hood found fuel "squirting" from one of the two
Hole in the fuel pump. Big problem is that it is squirting directly onto the engine block!

    Thinking fire!

Pulled the pump and it looks rebuild able. Original fuel pump? Are rebuild kits plentiful? Why would anybody design a fuel pump to piss fuel on a hot engine block when it fails? " the fire/ smoke coming from your engine tells you it has failed!"

Yes, the OE fuel pumps are rebuildable. Im sure there are many rebuilders in Hemmings. There's a guy by me called Arthur Gould Rebuilders. He's been doing it since cast iron and fuel pumps first came out. Napa has replacement pumps. My Napa has alot of 401 parts in stock (owner has a 65 GS!:bglasses:). They fit and function the same but are a more modern design- more like a 350/ 455 pump.

The primary purpose of the "weep hole" is to prevent the moving diaphragm from acting like an air compressor if the unit were sealed. The weep hole is generally on the bottom of the pump, and under normal circumstances does not spray on hot exhaust manifolds. On my airplane, there is a hose extending from the weep hole to the very bottom of the engine compartment, where any leaking fuel will be dumped harmlessly overboard.

I'm still trying to figure how dumping fuel from and airplane can be harmless to anything below it

Easy, it totally vaporizes before it hits the ground.

Anybody have any idea if a rebuild kit or replacement diaphrams are available?

I know I can pick up a replacement pump pretty cheap, but i like the idea of rebuilding what is perhaps the original if I have the means.

    Thanks,
