How does one tell if a mechanical fuel pump is not supplying the gas the car wants?

Ive been working on little adjustments for the carb and keep finding that the plugs keep coming out lean. Most of the adjustments just got me over the bog condition, however this still isnt good enough.

    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

    Kevin,
How does the car run? It may take quite a while to see color on plugs with unleaded gas. Are you sure the engine is lean? With the engine running, if you choke it out, does it speed up? What plugs are you running? heat range?

the car was bogging badly until i made some adjustments to the secondary spring tension...now, she is simply a bit slow. Also, when I start her up in the mornings, the motor has to turn over a little bit to get fuel inside the carb...

The choke is absent on the car right now, because I have a TA manifold and havent gotten around to getting the parts from GM. Plugs are the stock heat ranges Autolites (24-25?) for the car.

With my old GN, I recall seeing an overprint on the plugs when she was rich.... pretty much after only a little bit of running time... but then again... 42# injectors might do that...
