    Hey Y'all
this could be a dumb question but oh well, I install a new oil pressure gauge in my car. I was wondering what pressure should the oil pump be at?? Normally its around 30-35 psi. otherwise its running very low 20s. I'm running a stock 430. thanks for looking and your input.

Oil pressure for a stock 67-69 430 should be 40 psi at 2400 RPM. That is fully warmed up. When it is cold, pressure will be higher until the oil pump and oil warms up.

    thanks Larry
Since i put gauge in car its never been close to 40 psi. :af: what do you suggest me to do now ??? what kind of damage will i do by running it at 30 or less psi ???

    thanks for your help:TU:

The general rule of thumb is 10psi of oil pressure per 1,000RPM's. I wouldn't be so worried about the 20 something psi at idle, but if it isn't getting over 30 even when you gouge on the throttle, then that could get a little scary as you climb in RPM. What kind and weight or oil are you running?

The Big Block Buick would like 11-12 psi/1000 RPM ideally. You risk doing damage to the engine if you rev it higher without adequate oil pressure. With 30 psi, I wouldn't rev it over 3000 RPM. How sure are you of the gauge? Is it electrical or mechanical? Is the engine noisy? Does it smoke? Does the pressure vary with engine temperature, and RPM? Even if your maximum oil pressure is 30 psi hot, it should be substantially higher when you start the engine cold. Are you seeing that? I would try another good gauge.
