I had to take out the electric in-tank fuel pump to use a mechanical one. I cut the wires for the fuel level gauge but I don't know how to get it to work now. There were three wires on the old one, only one on the new one, I assumed one of those wires was to turn on the fuel pump though and another was a ground I think. I hooked up the one wire to each of the three coming from the wiring harness and none of them did anything. I'm sure this is really easy, but I don't know what to do... Thanks in advance.

Two of the wires are for the fuel pump... the third one is the signal wire for the gauge... on mine its an orange wire. It being an 81, there is just a plug that comes from the wireharness right by the fill pipe. One wire is a signal wire and the other is a ground. On yours, I would guess that you would need to hook back up the signal wire and the ground wire ( orange and black would be my guess). For the ground, just some how ground the sending unit.

I know its not traditional old school hot rod but if you are willing to think outside the box. Have you considered not going back to the 70s with a mechanical pump? If you buy a new 500 HP LS7 427ci Corvette they come with a quiet reliable power saving in tank electric pump. You have the hard part the tank, with the plastic baffle/pump bucket. I have a GN and a Cutlass with a 509ci 500HP motor. I put an old T-type tank in my Cutlass with the ready made Walbro 340 pump and harness. Check out the GN pump at www.racetronix.com I then put a Malory return style fuel regulator that I mounted up by the carb. My Q-jet always sees 5.75 pounds of cold fresh from the tank fuel. My pump is not dead headed so it does not have to work hard and should live the life of any regular in tank pump just like a new car. Food for thought.
