Hopefully, you saw the thread Tyler started about building the 70 skylark to a race car. We are started on it now.

We are going to run a fuel cell, and it would be helpful if you could post or email any pictures of how you set it up. We would much rather learn the best way from here, rather than learning the hard way.

    Thanks.

    mark,

I just finished mine in my 65. I will try to get picks this weekend.

I did create a base/mount for the cell to sit on so I didn't have to cut a hole in the trunk for the sump.

It's an old pic, but I built a small subframe-like structure below the trunk floor and used steel straps to hang a 22 gallon cell where the tank used to be.

Devon did you have to cut the trunk floor? More pictures please. I'm interested by tank is nasty.

Trunk floor is out completely, needed replacement anyway thanks to a lifetime of MI winters. I don't have any other pics at the moment, but will see what I can do when the weather is warmer than right now!

If cell is under the car may need to be wrapped in metal if it is plastic, most people put them in the trunk, that way your fuel pump is not above bottom of tank. if it is a race only car on gas it only needs a 2 gallon cell, i have one if your interested.

devon how fast is your car? looks like quite the build, and I like your additude, it is the one to have if you want to go fast...

We are cutting out a lot of metal, but will keep the trunk floor in place and put the fuel cell in the trunk.
I don't know why most people won't show pictures. I want to make sure we plumb everything correctly and set it up right.

Thank you for everybody that has helped.

Mark, tyler, here is what I built for the Century. 16 Gallon cell mountined in the trunk without having to cut the floor for the sump.

Greg, where did you get that rack or frame. That would be perfect for what we want to do. It looks great.

Cut and welded it up myself out of 1" 316 Stainless angle. It actually weighs in less than the fuel cell empty. Pretty easy to do.

Thanks! I got one 1/2 decent run in at Milan back in '97 or '98. Zero traction through first got me something like a 13.2, but the mph was almost 115! I pretty much found the limitations of the stock drums and got teased for taking the last turnoff.

I'm almost afraid to give it traction for fear of breaking something; I'm not real big on the two-piece driveline. Sure is fun on the street, though...

Mark, This frame is in the Century in my avatar and sig. Like you I did not want to cut out the floor. I didn't like any of the fuel cell mounts that I found at Summit or Jegs or like places, so decided to design one for myself. With Gregs help we made this one (he knows how to weld). nice thing is it is built out of scrap metal so all it cost me was a coat of paint and some nuts and bolts.

Great..Now make one for an 8 gallon cell and ship it to Pat Harmon,Loganton Pa. I'll send a money order for shipping and paint...lol

I will have to consider that It looks like a clean job. Since I am trying to lose more weight,I'll just hack a hole in my perfect trunk floor...:Dou: Wouldn't you figure it,the nicest trunk in any of my cars and it's going to be a racecar.

What's the general consensus on the fuel pump being inside the trunk as opposed to under the car? As far as safety is concerned I've heard some guys say it's not a good idea and others say it's fine.

Tyler Northcutt Just an old pile of parts

I heard that if you are going to be driving the car on the street, you should mount it outside the trunk, because it can overheat in the trunk.

There is now airflow for the pump to cool down if it is in the trunk.

Didn't think of that. The concerns that I hear most is the possibility of a fuel leak via ruptured line etc. causing a fire in the trunk.
