I plan on replacing the rope seal on my 425 with Federal Mogul # 474272. The question is, how do you get the rope seal lip out of the back of the timing cover? I do not want to break the cover. I haven't got a spare anymore. My original has a couple of screwed up threads and a broken bolt.:Dou:
It looks like it was crimped in place at the factory. Do you just tap at the joint with a small screwdiver to get between the cover and the lip? I have the old cover to practice with. Or should I take it to a machine shop to have the lip pressed out? I would prefer to do it myself, but sometimes I'm better off not doing them myself.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

I used a flat nosed punch from the front side, tapping the rope back pushing on the retaining ring. then gently pry up the ring with a screwdriver. It worked for me; happy motoring! Frank:beer

    Hey guys,

When I went to the local napa machine shop and asked them how to get out the rope seal carrier, the guy took a flat punch and set it against the rope seal lip from the front and whacked it. The carrier is held in by a couple of wimpy crimps that you need to grind down before you put in a seal. Don't forget to put the seal in with the face against the front of the cover.

I practiced on my spare cover and it popped right out. Waiting for the new oil pan gasket to arrive, then I take the cover off and put in the new seal.
    Thanks for the advise,
    Steve
