I've never heard of this extra security actually finding guns or anything, just picking on old ladies and people with piercings.
I could understnad the paranoia about security if it actually worked, but every second week you hear about someone getting on a plane with some sort of weapon just to prove a point. ...then after you board the plane they will happily give you a glass beer bottle, instant weapon.
