I scored the LP maybe 15 years ago, listened to it a few times, and then shelved it. But a song or two pop up on the Internet radio station I listen to catches my ear and I look to see who it is and it's Crabby Appleton! So I think the LP is worth another listen for even me, a guy who owns it! Here's a partial review in Rolling Stone: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/...never-heard-20150611/detroit-detroit-20150611 I'm familiar with most of the groups in the list and went through the same thing – listened, then shelved.
I do have a lot of CDs, but we also have the Internet to thank for mp3s. For example, the Wilderness Road that was listed in the above article was something I had read about but never seen, and then I discovered the album that someone uploaded in sound files, so that gave me an opportunity to hear what they were like.
I really enjoy looking up and listening to music on youtube, etc. The local stations all play mostly the cover tunes that were overplayed back when they first aired. I like to hear other good songs that were on the albums. Examples are Tom Petty's "Waiting for Tonight" and John Melloncamp's "What if I come Knockin'?", a couple of my favorites. Not obscure, just that I very seldom hear them unless I look them up. I also like Toad the Wet Sprocket. Again, seldom played locally.
Reminds me of my old neighborhood. The song is about Chambacu, a neighborhood. And how proud they are to be from it.
Remember these guys? They also did, 'A Little Bit of Soul' & '96 Tears which was originally recorded by ? and the Mysterians. These next two, I haven't heard for years. <iframe width="770" height="481" src="" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="641" height="481" src="" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Haven't read all the thread, it is extensive. I would say that Rare Earth's "Born to Wander" has been largely forgotten. Still have the album and play it a couple times a year.
Hard to believe that’s the same Grace Slick that appears in the “we built this city” and “nothing going to stop us now” starship videos. Although those eighties songs are neat in a way. Both went to billboard #1. And Slick was one of the oldest at that time to chart a #1 song.
Us old guys thought that Jefferson Airplane/Starship had "sold out" when they did "We Built This City"... I used to change the station whenever that song came on!
Who Put the Bomp--Barry Mann (1961) Barry Mann is in the songwriters Hall Of Fame, along with his wife. He co-wrote many great songs such as On Broadway. Here, he actually cut a song himself.
Some deep cuts I remember are Around the Universe in Eighty Days by Klaatu and Turning Around by Gentle Giant. Something different. Also Saturday Night by Herman Brood and his Wild Romance and Cactus by the Pixies.
Oh heck - started listening to various suggestions here. GREAT THREAD. Listening lead me to remember: BTO - "Blue Collar" - really gets good when they start the "cool jamming" at around 4:40 into the song. While we're at it....BTO again - "Gimme Your Money Please" and "Not Fragile" (still remember when that one came out back in high school).
