for race car application only, ford or the 8.5, looking for something that will make it to 9sec in future, is one cheaper, stronger, easier to fix set-up, thanks for the input, John.
You can make an 8.5 work to run into the 9's, but will be at it's limit. Not much available as far a pro gears for it. A 9" will be able to run well into the 9's, 8's, 7's. Much more available, plus the fact you can remove the center section w/o removing the whole housing is a big plus. I had a 9" built by Quick Performance in Iowa for $650 shipped for the housing and axles last year, but it was a leaf spring rear. I know they make housings for A-Body and G-body cars as well.
