Is the sheetmetal flywheel cover on a '65 GS with a 4-speed transmission supposed to be painted the same green color as the engine and flywheel housing, or is it supposed to be zinc plated?
I had to fabricate one for my car out of an old Dynaflow cover since mine was missing when I got the car. So I have no idea what color/finish is supposed to be on it.

Brian, if you decide to fabricate a few more, I'll buy one off you, I dont care what color it is!:Brow: Frank

I will be happy to fabricate some more of them if someone can come up with some cores to start with. The piece I need to make one from is the cover from a 1960's style Dynaflow that came behind a nailhead engine. The cover on the smaller displacement nailhead engines from the 50's is different and will not work (I am not sure what year the change was made, but I know the '61-'63 dylaflow cover will work for this).

Here's a pic that George sent me. It's black (obviously). Looks rather difficult to fabricate....

The Dynaflow cover is very close--the top 80% of it is exactly the same. So what I did was take one of them and modify the bottom 20% of it to match what the correct 4-speed cover is like.
You are right though--fabricating one from scratch would be a very big task!
The Dynaflow cover will actually bolt on and fit as is, it just doesn't look like the correct one at the bottom and the bottom two bolts can't be used.

The color on my 65 GS is BLACK. It is the orig. cover and only been off twice in the past 36 years. First time for a stock clutch/presure plate, 6 yrs. later for a 67 427/ 435 hp vett. hd cl. & p.p, still in and working smooth.

    Hope this helps

Looks like the consensus from everyone is that it is supposed to be painted black, so that is what color mine will get on it. Thanks everyone for your help!

Brian, I have no source for cores, I'll look around online. 61-63 dynalow cover. Does it have to be a particular engine? Thanks, Frank

Long as the car has a 364 or 401 and a dynaflow transmission it will work. I called around to some of the salvage yards that advertise parting Buicks in Hemmings and found one that had one to sell me and had them ship me the cover. That was a couple of years ago. Just put a post on here under parts wanted--I am sure someone has some laying around somewhere. I will try to get a picture of mine and post it on here today--the car is disassembled right now under restoration, so I have it laying in the pile of parts.
