Float Level Too High?

The top gasket is damp. It's been this way since I started the motor at the beginning of the year. I took the top of the carb off to check the float level again and the gasket got wet and hasn't dried out yet. Is this a common thing on a Q-Jet or have I got the float level a little too high?

I don't seem to have any of the usual high float level problems and no black smoke except for the poor fuel mileage problem, but the engine is still breaking in and it is a rather large car  .

The carb. is off a '77 350 Buick and was rebuilt before it went on the engine.

    Thanks, Greg

Mine used to do that until I got my choke working properly. I used to have to pump the pedal a lot to get (and keep) the car running. Now that my choke works, the wetness went away!

very common for the air horn on these carbs to be warped due to so many times apart and most people over tighten the screw/bolts. this warping is what causes the gasket to leak. I can almost guarantee that is your problem. I remedy this by using two top gaskets together and rub them with a heavy 50 weight motor oil before installing them. This seems to stop the leaks.
