I thought I'd start a new thread & follow up on the discussion about the VIN plate fastened at Buick or Fischer.

In reference to Brad's mention of the rivet direction in the assembly manual, on page 0-2.0

    "Fastener Installation
Fasteners are to be installed in direction shown unless optional direction is specified
    ."

Also while I was looking at the 71 assembly manual, I then pulled out my Fischer Body Buyout Sheet. On there I noticed I had "A02" (tinted windshield only) option listed. Why would Fischer list that if they did NOT install it? Then I looked up "A02" in the UPC option list, and it shows "F" for Fischer in the division column. :Smarty:

So on the flip side, I see a "M-40" on the Fischer Body Sheet, and I know Fischer didn't install that. :Do No: :Dou:

Anyway, I assume the "M-40" was there because, if a 4 speed or buckets were ordered, they had to have a hole in the floor for the shifter. :Do No:

    Dan,

You are correct, Fisher Body did need to know what trans was being installed as they, as you noted, had different "holes" in the floor (or none at all). The 4 speed "bump" was installed at Fisher Body and they cut the hole in the floor, too. That is why you see the transmission type, so they could install the proper parts in the body.

    Dave,

They should be installed from the bottom as per the assembly manual, but you never know. How about posting the VIN's and Data Tag information of each of the cars you have. There may be a clue in that information...

It "could" be that plant "G" installed the VIN differently than plant "H" (Flint). That is why I asked for the VIN and data plate info. Just taking a guess is all. The assembly manual says they should be installed from the bottom, but sometimes different plants do things differently.

As far as a GSX clone, that is no problem in my book as long as you don't try to pass it off as the real thing. A lot of people have cloned a GSX. Hey, it's your car. Do with it as you wish!

Thanks for the info Brad. You hear so many opinions on some of this stuff ,You and other very knowledgeable Buick enthusiasts on this and other boards It was a just out of curiosity as to why they would be put in differently
And no i would never pass it off as a real GSX It is a documented from Slone GS 455 auto only thing missing is the original n25 bumper and exhaust long gone before i got the car If i only knew then what i would spend $ on full blown restoration / rebuild I could have got a #2 or 3 original GSX But its a little late for that
    Thanks Again
    Later Dave

Yes mine is a convertible, but that doesn't have anything to do with it. Fischer installed all glass prior to shipping the body to Buick final assembly, be it coupe or convertible. That is also why you will not find glass installation in the Buick final assembly manual (or at least I think, because I haven't checked it:grin: ). :bglasses:
