Well I have it back in the car and running. Its "clackety" from the valve covers like before with the iron stage ones . I have the TA SE heads now. The clacking is all up high. Is this normal for these 455 Buicks...its been so long since I built another 455 (this one second go around :( ) I cant remember if my old one was clacky up top all the time compared to small block Chevys etc. I think the 288-94h is a fast ramp profile - it just sounds like valves slamming shut to me - but its un-nerving to hear. Anybody else have this experience...I have new TA lifters, pushrods arent hitting- are centered and I have proper preload. Thanks, John

I have found that the aluminum heads require a bit more preload than iron heads. They grow more when hot. I'm at 3/4 turn past 0 lash now. They are dead quiet when cold, but a lttle clicky when hot. I have roller rockers. I could probably go to 1 full turn, but I think you are better a little loose than too tight.

Larry just by feel when you are at tdc 3/4 turn past zero lash can you still turn the pushrods with your finger with some effort or are they too tight to move ? I have experienced the same quieter (but still clicky) at startup until the oil thins out then its click time........Thanks J.

I run the 288-94H and I have valvetrain noise...have checked and rechecked pushrod adjustments. I think it's the nature of this particular cam profile.

Yes I have heard fast ramps do this too......I guess I shouldnt worry thanks for your input...J

Want a perfectly quiet valvetrain? Get a completely stock motor. There will be some noise with performance after market stuff. It doesn't bother me.

Good Post Larry! Making Power = making noise! It bothers me a bit too, but, be glad you are not a Chevy guy with a gear drive:TU: MO

  12. I didnt have any valvetrain noise with the 113 or 118 cam. now that i'm half deaf i doubt i'd hear any noise with a solid cam

It doesnt bother me per se - noise in a performance motor ....I guess I am overly sensitive to any noises in this build right now as I am coming off a smoked motor with less than 500 miles on it . Hopefully there is no relationship between the valvetrain clacking and my last builds early demise..... .Its been a long road ! JFK

My 65 idling cold ~ 900 rpm - TA 288-94h +4 advanced, Ta se heads,10:1 , 2.5 " summit turbos, pypes xpype system ,gessler manifolds. It sounds a little nastier once hot - idled down. J

Well its looking like I will be heading back to the track for the first time since my 600 mile motor fried. Along with a fresh rebuild I have Nitto NT555R's, a rear sway bar, new rear shocks to hopefully get that blazing 2.4 sec 60 ft down :Brow: spin spin spin...... ...heres a few pics - wish me luck - no 2nd meltdown  .....pretty sure I will be selling her in the next 3 months as its time for another project ....... You can't be embarrassed when a Subaru WRX beats you off the line! It's a lighter car with AWD!!! It's virtually impossible to launch better unless you're running drag tires with a burn out before hand. I've raced them at tracks with my charger and every time they shot out of the hole like a bullet. Just accept that four wheels are going to get better traction than two.

You should have at least emptied your tires to as low as 20-22 psi for a tad more traction. That's what I did on top of the track techs spraying the alcohol sticky stuff, (sorry, i don't know what its called) which gave me a super launch on street tires on my last two passes.:3gears:

That's all I have to offer. Might want to invest in some steeper gears w/posi, but I'm sure you already knew that.
