OK. My first tune up is almost complete. I've replaced plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and now am looking to fine tune my 350. It's HEI with a 4bb Quradrajet. Is it possible/recommended to set mixture and timing without all the meters and gauges? I don't own any. I've heard for the timing, just turn it up until it starts to ping, then back off a little. On the mixture, I've read about setting them in - then 2 turns back, listening for highest rpms. Am I setting myself up for trouble, or should I go out and get the dwell meter, tach, guages, and timing light?
i've always done mixture by ear and foot. (fairly lean and no bog = perfect :TU: ) timing can be done just the same...if you want it spot on, though, you may want to invest in a timing light. they're not too expensive.
