I got the "I can only come over right now" call so have less than an hour. All I know is it is supposed to be a 12 bolt positive traction Chevrolet rear end it is currently mounted in a model T that the guys dad has given up on and he is willing to trade me Chevelle parts for it. All I know how to ID on a Chevy is the stamped code on the Passenger-side tube at 6 o'clock position which he does not have and he is on his way so all I have are these pictures. Obviously missing coil mounts but "supposed" to be rebuilt,no idea of gear so rolling the dice it is more valuable than this stuff I have zero use for! Any help would be greatly appreciated!sorry I know it is not much to go on and obviously no way to tell of gear ratio. But I would rather have a posi rear than Chevelle body stuff Fritz
If it's a posi, spin one of the drums one full revolution and count how many times the yoke goes around and you'll have a ballpark estimate.....3 times is 3.00:1, 3 and 3/4 is most likely a 3.73, just over 4 is 4.10 or 4.11, etc. Gets you a good idea. Or pull the cover and count teeth.
I can't tell from the pictures but does that rear have the upper mounts on the center section that the upper control arms would mount to in a Chevelle or Impala? It looks wide from backing plate to backing plate. Is it possible it is a truck 12 bolt which pretty much isn't compatible with the car model. If it doesn't have the upper mounts and is narrower than a Chevelle width it could be from a Camaro up to '70.
Mike, I was in such a rush pulling parts to try and sell the guy I totally missed the absence of those upper mounts, so that is a deal killer for me anyway. Thanks for spotting that and yes it does look like a longer rear-end as you also noted. A stock 66 Chevelle from drum face to drum face I believe is only 60". It looks like a Canadian built Skylark rear. I've got one of those on my '69 GS400. 3.07 posi, which is originally built in Canada. Edit: the upper mounts do look differently. Is it customized?
This was put in his Dads model T project he has given up on and they have zero details on it to confirm the "rebuild" or anything else even though only 2 bolts are holding the cover on so no reason they shouldn't at least know the ratio. Gotta love Craigslisters. I'm not touching it with a 10ft pole.
I think you're right. I still think it is a 66 chevelle or full size,but they cut off the upper control arm mounts so it is useless other than the guts.
Hey Fritzer... If you've got some useless Chevelle stuff to trade, at least look into it being a Posi unit and what gear. Gut it and scrap the pipes and sell the internals' for the X-rat, no? Just a thought... Take a sawzall along and cut the panhard bar stuff off to sweeten the deal. That's a $75 part from Speedway... ws

Yes Sir, I am being forced to down size to afford finishing this blot on the Buick world lol I am down to securing dependable functioning mechanical parts and none of that is cheap unfortunately but better than standing on the side of the road with a "This is NOT an abandoned car!" Bumper snicker and my thumb stuck out for a ride lol
