Did some searching here and reading in my reference books, but nothing states whether posi was something that could be ordered on a Skylark in 1972. I always thought that posi was sort of reserved for the GS, but have been finding that Buick sort of let go of the rules a little in 1972 on these kind of things. Anyone know if you could order posi and a 3.42 on a Skylark that year?

in 72, a posi could be ordered for just about every gm car whether a 6 banger or a v8. for a plain skylark or skylark custom, i would guess that any gear 3.00 & above could not be ordered. now a gs is a whole nother ballgame.

The Posi option wasn't "reserved" for anything..it was an option on the order form for any base model 2 or 4 door Skylark to a fully optioned GSX. Several years ago I found a 71 model Post car that had a Posi in it. It was a 2.56 ratio. I found the Build Sheet under the rear seat and it had been ordered from the factory that way.

Interesting. Thanks for the help, guys. For some reason, I thought posi was reserved for the GS. I was just curious.

I'm not sure about Buick... but I know with chevy you could place a C.O.P.O and get about whatever you wanted.

I know my dad had a 68' Nova with a 350 horse 327, M22, 4.11 posi, bench seat, non SS car he ordered in 67.. kinda neat to get a beast w/ a window sticker. lol

You could special order diifferent axle ratios...memory's getting dim, so what I don't remember is, whether you could special order any ratio available or only from those considered standard within a Series...

Posi (limited slip differential) Were much more prevelent in the mountain area in the north east as they THOUGHT that it would help with traction in the snow...What laugher....lol :3gears: :3gears: :3gears: :3gears:

we know better now. posi in the snow is almost pointless in a muscle car.

For dry road performance it is great.

Anyway we find a ton of posi units in all the cars from Pennsylania and northest.

So that would determine why some cars received posi unit too. where the car was going to be sold. Jim

i dunno.. posi definatly helps going up snowy hills up my way..my 72 lark with open end would go completelty sideays within 5 feet of attempting my hill..while the 64 lesabre went up like nothing

Did some quick research, and can answer OP's question for 1971...I'll "assume" Buick did the same for '72...but you know what that means.

All intermediates (Skylark, Skylark Custom, GS, Sportwagon), except GS Stage 1, could order just Posi (Code G4). They would get whatever axle ratio came standard for Series/powertrain. Likewise, "Performance Axle with Positive Traction" (Code G1) was available for above intermediates with automatics. That would get you the 3.42 ratio.

As an FYI, and for completeness...intermediate axle options were G1, G2, G4, G5, and G6. G2 was performance without posi, G5 was economy axle, and G6 was economy w/posi...

he had the L79 engine. this engine would rev like no tomorrow. eventhough it had 25 hp less than the L78 (396 ci, 375 hp) it could out out drag a nova equipped with that engine because it was many pounds lighter than the L78. and yes, M22 tranny was available but it was not the rockcrusher version.
