Extra oil holes needed in main bearing?

    Hi all,
I read a post a while back about drilling 2 extra holes in each main bearing, about an inch or so from the central oil hole, and then cutting a groove behind the bearing, to carry the oil.

I'm sure that one of the Jims also endorsed this idea, as well as Mike T., and I remember Jim said the idea originally came from MASCAR.

I mentioned this to Brian at Earrick Racing Engines, and he said this was a big mistake. Said they had tried it on several marine motors, I believe, with disasterous results.

So, now I'm confused. The original post said that this was good for an additional 50% oil volume to the rods, which most of us need--yet now I don't know whether I should do it.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers,

Craig, the extra oil holes are not 1 inch from the original hole, but rater about 3/4 of an inch from the cap parting line.
I have used this method on several higher horsepower engines over the years with very good results.
I originally came across it when I got my second moldex 4.5 inch stroker crank and it came with out being crossdrilled, so I caleed moldex and asked them why they did not cross drill it. Whitey over there told me about this newer technology of the added oil holes in the bearings and said they were doing that now.
I don't know of any downsides to doing this modification.
