ooookay, i've got a 74 buick riviera GS 455-4bbl that i recently aquired. was looking on the net and was reading about some of buicks experimental stuff, like the stage III 4 bolt block. buick cast an "X" onto the block to mark it as experimental, correct? i was looking at my engine tonight after work, the intake on my engine has this supposed experimental "x" cast onto it just to the driver side of the carb. do i have something special, or have i been misinformed? do any of you guys have this same mark on your intake?

Do you have a picture of it?

Highly doubtful you have anything special....

Are there any other markings or numbers on the intake?

yeah, i kinda figured it wouldn't be anything special, that sort of stuff never comes my way... but i still found it odd. i probably could get a pic or two of it, if i can manage to borrow a digital camera... i'll try and get a pic of it some time soon. i didn't see any other special markings on it... and boy, that was a fast reply on your part, hehe.

XF or XA is your engine code . In 1974" X" was the prefix for the V8.

Why would that letter be on his intake manifold?

I have a '74 intake sitting around my shop. I'm going to start my car this weekend and I'll yank out the '74 manifold I have and look for casting marks...I really doubt the '74 manifold would be anything special...Ryda, are you sure it's a 1974 manifold? A lot of years have passed by since these cars were new and who is to say that manifold is the original 1974 unit or not? A '74 manifold would have smog equipment as mentioned, or at least block off plates to cover up the holes. As I recall, a solenoid covered some of the driver's side of my intake beside the carb, so I wonder if you don't have an earlier year manifold to begin with.

the engine is from a 74 estate wagon any ideas?
could this have been a warrenty replacement block or something?

Got it from Catalog of American Car ID Numbers 1970 - 79.

Book was a Cars And Parts magazine release.

    Sorry for the lousy scan.

    Oh My!!!

A ZI 455 only had 175 HP. The 231 in my 86 regal has almost that much. The smog era sucked!!!

    That's what happens when you choke a 455 with a lowly 2 barrell carburetor:Dou:
