Exhaust systems

I have been looking at my TA and Poston books for my new motor exhaust. I just found out that Poston does not even have the down pipes for thier systems or X pipes either. I guess thier loss of any sale.

I am wanting to keep the manifolds on my motor and run at least a 2 1/2" with X pipe. I can buy it all from TA, but I have read some posts about Summit and TT. What or who is TT? I understand that TA has a wonderful reputation for thier fit and quality, but I want to look at all options. Especially if there are any tips to assist me in dollar savings. My rich uncle is still alive and probably will be for years after me, LOL.

Then again, I read a quote of Nick F, and he states to use a 3" through an X to the mufflers and 2 1/2" after the muffs with manifolds, and you will get an awesome system, sound and performance. I tried to email Nick a few days ago concerning his involvement of exhaust systems and I have not received any response from him yet. I know he is not too far from me and maybe he has systems and/or installs them.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you've made the right choice as far as 2.5" duals... that is what I plan on putting in my car, most likely from TA (Unless the local muff shop can mandrel bend up something cheaper)

I think when people talk about "TT" they are refering to Torque Tech ( http://torquetechexh.com/ ) but I could be wrong.

Their system with downpipes and no mufflers is 388...

TT=Torque Tech, they build mandrel bent exhaust systems, much the same as TA I would imagine, if your gonna by a bolt in system you might as well go with TA and support a Buick vendor, Torque Tech is more into Mopars I believe.
I have the TA shorties and an X-pipe so the bolt in wouldn't work for me, I pieced mine together.
    TA Shorties
Hedman 2.5 X-pipe kit from Jegs
    Magnaflow longcase mufflers
    Flowmaster mandrel bent tail pipes
I paid my local shop to fill in the blanks (head pipe connection, extensions from xpipe outlet to muffler inlet, tail pipe detailing etc...)and weld everything up.
Got about $1100 in the whole thing. If your sticking with manifolds you can knock $500 off that.

    Len,

Whew, I am hoping to do it for less than that. Around $450 or so. Maybe I am dreaming, but I hope to do so...

"Torque tech is more into mopars I believe." Torque tech used to be called Buick 1 many years ago. I bought many parts from them in the early 90's. Camshafts, intakes, & the first 3" mandrel bent exhaust in my area(circa 1993). As to what he sells now I don't know. But Torque Tech was originally Buick oriented.

    Mike,
There are definately ways to keep the cost down, mufflers for instance, I could have spent maybe $50 less but I really like magnaflows, and there are cheaper x-pipes out there, I've heard of them now for $50, that would knock of another $120 but would add a bit on the shop cost. If your not in SoCal it will probably be cheaper for the shop cost too, everything out here is inflated.

    Len,

Thanks for more input. The sad story for me is that I am in "everything seems to be double priced" New York !!!

I have been shocked at everything that I have done. I am thinking that it may pay for me to tow my car back down to VA to get this work done, LOL. I will be looking into it soon hough. I was hoping to hear from Nick to find out what his situation is.

I put some side in center out mufflers from Summit (thier own brand) on my parts cars 455, and they are very low restrictive, as in somewhat loud. Summit claims that they had equal power results as the Dynomax mufflers, and at $15 each, I may use those types. Anyone out there have any personal inputs on them?

    Thanks again. Mike

I will probably end up going with the summit mufflers once I finally get a new exhaust run... since it will most likely only be a temporary thing (i.e. till I can build a 455) do they sound good? (loud isn't really an issue)

It is a little difficult to answer that Eric. There is a medium header gasket leak on the pass. side, and that helps to louden the sound as it is. It definately has a deep sound to it. And especially if you are going to gp temp until a 455, you can't beat the price. If you are down my way in the near future, feel free to stop by and you can hear them.

    New system for my GS

I had the TA setup, 2.5" Mandrel bent from stock manifolds, Dynomax SuperTurbos... I never really liked the Superturbos, especially the driver's side that started knocking occasionally.

So I have been reading these posts, decided to find the longest case flow through muffler I could find. That turned out to be the Ultra Flo Welded RV muffler, 24" long! I did not want to get all new pipes, but I wanted the balancing of an H pipe, so I got one from Jegs.

Put it together with the TA tubes, actually did a better job this time. IT SOUNDS GREAT, not loud but deeep, got rid of that knocking muffler and sagging tips @ the back of the car. Driving has always been a pleasure, now I have the sound I want to leave behind! Here comes the Weekend!

    i have torque tech

I got a whole catalogue from 99 that is totally dedicated to buicks.

I have no complaints with the torque tech exhaust, I'd buy it again. Everything fits nicely.

does anybody remember the page article about TT talking about the GSCA and a certain sombody:puzzled:

Can someone point me out to TT? Web page especially. I will search also. Maybe phone number also.

    11secondgs,
Did you get from manifolds or headers? That makes a difference, if I decide to go with manifolds.

    Thanks, Mike

i have poston headers with the torque tech 3" mandral.

I have no experiance with TA exhuast, but If it is like the rest of the LOT, it's probably good stuff.

Thanks Eric. Hopefully you can make it down before I end up pulling the motor out. Tom, here on the board, is coming down tomorrow to get a hood. He is interested in the motor and he will hear them. I can have him comment on the sound of them as well.

That would work, too. I should have the Skylark back together by Sunday (I know, I've been really slow doing this)... it all is just a matter of getting some cash for gas and waiting for a sunny day.

Been there Eric. Not that I am loaded with cash, believe me, I am far from that! I used to be in the Navy and lived that payday to payday for a very long time. My parts purchases was done within 3 days from the ole paycheck...

No but I remember RL thrashing torque tech in the gsxtra severl times...perhaps thats why he is no longer into buicks...
