I plan on swapping out my bad-to-the-bone dual 2" exhaust. I'm confused avout either a 2 1/2", or the monster 3." I've heard that the 3" system does a poor job of muffling the sound. I'd like t to be sorta quiet since I ussually leave the house early, and setting off the neighbors car alarms isn't as fun as it used to be. My only concern is the 2 1/2" is too small for a big block. I don't want to choke the motor, but I want it to be quiet. Whats the deal? Is the 3" too loud? Is the 2 1/2" too small?? can I afford either one?? :Dou:
    Thanks:beer Joe

A 2-1/2" system will generally support an engine up to about 475-500 hp.

2.5 inch( TA), 17749 Walker dyno max 20 inch mufflers ( summitracing) and x pipe (Dr gas). Great perf and relatively quiet until provoked. Flowmasters are too loud and drone.

    Joe,
2 1/2" is fine for most 455's. 3" is better, but louder. My system is sort of a compromise. MT Headers into a Dr. Gas X pipe that is 3" from the headers to the X, then 2 1/2" to the Walker 17749 long case mufflers. The system is amazingly quiet, until you get on it.

Mine is setup that way as well......

3.5 out of the header into the DR-Gas X...... 3 inch out of the X into the muff's, and 2.5 out of muffs to the bumper. It seems to have been a good compromise for sound / performance. Don't get me wrong, it's a bit on the loud side, but not as loud as a straigt 3 inch system, and I think it probably performs every bit as well.

I would like to know the difference between this X setup and just running duals straight from the manifolds/headers? Is there any benefit to this?

    Well,
Helps in exhaust scavenging, and reduces or eliminates drone. possible 10-30 HP increase. Go to wwwdrgas.com click on articles, and read what they claim. I noticed a difference in low end pull.

2.5 good to 500 h/p even then a 3 '' wont make a seat in the pants difference, i would go 3'' if you can aford it, just keep it all 3'' i think a lot of mufflers are 3'' pipe on the outside but reduce down to 2.5 inside.

I have the 3 inch on my 71 with a 350.I highly suggest you dont do like I did and get the Race Bullets for mufflers(unless you really hate your neighbors).
I really liked how well the 3 inch bolted up under the car and the look of the tips is way cool.In my opinion the extra money spent was well worth it.I live out in the boonies so noise wasn't really a big concern for me.
