Didn't read through all of the posts here but you could try Spintech mufflers? I put them on my olds 455, they are mellow ish at idle, when you get on it they become louder but no bad drone. That 40 MPH zone has a nice mellow roar to it. I don't know if you blocked your heat riser for your intake back when you did the motor but that can add a drone for sure. Tim
It quieted the drone some. The drone came in at about 67 MPH ( 2000 RPM ) It was better with the resonators. They didn't seem to change much at W.O.T. Bob H.
Thanks to everyone for all the great input. I hope this thread will be able to help many others in the future.
I still have about 3 months before it will be back on the road. As of right now I am thinking....... I LOVE how it sounds with no tail pipes, very aggressive with no drone. So I might just cut the tail pipes off again. Secondly I am debating on having some "resonance chambers" built and installed. I'll keep you posted.
Drone update Resonance chambers built and installed. Result.......a higher pitched and slightly worse drone Latest...... Cut both tail pipes off just after the mufflers. Installed down tips at a slight outward angle which end just before the rear axle. I drove around town and just about passed out from asphyxiation. I am so ready to be done with all of these exhaust problems!
As mentioned previously, the flowmasters on my GS drone alot too. A drive around the neighborhood has a wonderful sound. But hit 50 mph or more and my ears are ringing by the time I get to a show So I bit the bullet and ordered the same kit I had in the last GS 2.5" magnaflow stainless cross over system Should be here by weeks end and might even get it installed next week. Will let you know the difference.
Re: Drone update Tell us more about these "resonance chambers" you built. The more detail, the better. Sorry to hear you're still fighting this. Devon
Your best very is blastin bobs resonators... You pick how quiet you want the drone. But they are pricey
2.5 inch pipe 20 inches long sealed on one end and attached to the tail pipe directly after the mufflers.
Maybe we are confusing terminology here; it's always tough to describe a sound with words. Trust me on this as I've been a classical violinist and an audiophile for over thirty years. Words suck at describing sounds. To me, exhaust "drone" means a resonant frequency that occurs at some engine/vehicle speeds which brings a harsh tone into the passenger compartment. In some cases at least bad enough to cause discomfort, at worst headaches. When it happens you have to drive above or below the speed at which it happens to make a drive enjoyable. I don't want to "pick how quiet" I want the drone, I want it GONE. Devon
Yes I have definitely spent too much already I can add $250 to the running tally after today. I'm about to take off the Flowmasters and put on some quite mufflers WITH resonators. I love the aggressive sound but I don't want the drone or to be asphyxiated. It's so sad that after all of this I still can't find good balance.
Devon. Really ... (chill pill) 2 if drone is described as resonance, then wouldn't resonators be that solution? 3 blastin bobs offers db levels to choose from and they work great with flowmasters.lets not get carried away here
Exactly To me it's like the sound you hear when you blow into the top of a empty bottle. Only the bottle is 4600 lbs and in the shape of a Buick Riviera. ---------- Post added at 08:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:31 PM ---------- I was just considering getting the Dynomax vt mufflers until I read the reviews. Ok so I am pretty sure I am just going to get some super turbo mufflers, rebuild 2.5 inch out the back and ditch the flowmasters. Do I need to pay attention to the brand and flow numbers or will I see a difference?
$275 later I had new tail pipes made and installed over the rear axles. I still have the drone but at least I have the fumes diverted behind the car. So in total more than $500 for fabricating and installing resonance chambers, cutting the tail pipes off and then fabricating and installing new tail pipes. Same place I was in not even 48 hours ago. To say the least I am a little frustrated and depressed over the situation
What I read said ... "This pipe is to be connected to your exhaust at any point before the mufflers and can be bent in any shape, it's the length and diameter that are important" Your diagram shows them after the muffler.
Ceasar, put down the glue tube. "Blastin Bob" doesn't sell resonators, they sell kits that ELIMINATE resonators and replace them with simple glasspack mufflers for people who want their production cars to sound "tougher". Guess what...after their installation, some people complain about increased drone as a result! Why in the world would you think to suggest something like this for Davy? Devon
sure is a big thread for a simple answer RESONATORS......if i take mine off it sounds like 10 second electra. dynomax tube RESONATORS and i dont really beleive there is that much restriction, marty
Well I was unsure if the chambers should go before or after the muffler..... Before I had the shop weld it on I double checked all the posts in this thread. If I read them right there were 3 or 4 people that said the resonance chambers should go in the tail pipes. Also I crossed checked that by looking at examples from google images and found a few on there showing them after the mufflers. I probably made a mistake again by misreading everyones suggestions. "Resonance chambers can be good and they can be bad. The trick is to tune the volume to create the perfect cancellation between the positive and negative pressure waves. This is an equation that requires lots of trial and error." Unfortunately I am out of resources for any more trial and error. I am just so frustrated and depressed over all of this. I am throwing money away and have been very unsuccessful. I just added up the price of all the exhaust work in the last two years and I am at $1,300 and I'm in the same exact place I started at. Good news is that the exhaust guy said that if I bring in some new mufflers he will install them for only $50. I'm thinking quieter generic turbo mufflers might be my best solution after 3 sets of Dynomax and my current set of Flowmasters.
