excessive fuel pressure ??

  1. today while doing some brief test running of the engine bfore breaking in the new cam i noticed some fuel along the gasket where the top of the carb is. checked all screws and hose clamps..after a while i went back out and more fuel had accumulated in same area. pulled inlet line and there was still pressure in it. left inlet line disconnected from carb and hooked up a fuel pressure test gauge and ran the engine briefly to test fuel pressure. it was at 8 psi, shut engine down and watched gauge. fuel pressure stayed at 8 psi for a bit and gradually dropped to 7 psi. after 15 minutes the pressure is still at 7 psi. my fuel filter has a bipass line that runs back to the tank and i'm wondering why it isnt bleeding that pressure off. attached is a picture of the filter assy which is a wix identical to the one that was on car previously. also what is correct fuel pressure for a 65 GS with the AFB carb? 2. I went digging through my boxes of NOS and excellent used parts and found an NOS fuel filter. stuck it on the car. performed the same test and now fuel pressure is 6 1/2 lbs and fuel pressure bleeds of right away just like it should. i thought WIX parts were better quality.... :Do No:

I think the argument has been wix oil filters are really good. I am not saying the fuel filters are not, you may have just got a bad one. ALl it takes is something blocking the return feed.
I would check the gasket again on the carb though, I run 8psi through mine and they don't leak at all.
