For the last few weeks, after driving at higher RPMS, such as a quick stint on the interstate or WOT for a block of two, when I finally come to a complete stop at a light or stop sign, my engine will be running excessively fast, as if the fast idle has kicked on. If I slide it into park or neutral and jab the gas, it will usually come off, but it gets to be bothersome and sometimes I do not have the opportunity to try to kick it off. Before my brakes wear out from stopping this high RPM monster, what do I need to do? Thanks, Jacob
mine does that sometimes too. Not sure what it is but a stab of the throtle will kill it or if I open all 4 real hard.
mine jumps into fast idle again after coming to a quick stop sometimes. but mine only takes a quick "blip" of the gas to knock it down again. can do this in gear even. though in fast idle it sure is a lot harder to stop. nate
If you have a stock Q-jet, look at the pass side for the fast idle cam. It will have 3 steps and a small phillips screw rests on them. Unscrew it about 1/4 - 1/2 turn and that should solve your problem.
two other things to check - make sure you have a nice strong throttle return spring that's pulling your pedal back all the way - I found mine had disconnected once and the weight of the pedal will sometimes keep the throttle down further than you'd like. Also, get yourself some graphite lube (like for key locks) and lube all the linkages on your carb. Gas and Carb cleaner actually dry out the bushings and make the movement require more effort. I was SHOCKED at how improved my throttle response became after lubricating all the moving parts!!
