I'm having an issue with the rally gauge engine temp reading. Replaced the sending unit with new one and still having a problem, so the other one ws probably fine. Gauge stays on "C" when you warm up and drive the car, but when you turn the car off, it "moves up" and reads where the temp probably was. Start and run the car again and nothing,... it stays on "C". with no reading. Teflon tape is on sending unit. Car is 1970 buick gs 455.
Has the rally gauge been tested to know that it is working correctly? Also, are you sure you have the correct rally gauge temp sending unit?
Gauge is correct as it came with car, temp sensor is correct for rally, .... we put new wiring harness on car so it could be an issue with wiring harness perhaps. Car under went frame off restoration and gauge worked fine prior to car dissassembly. Probably should have tested gauge prior to re assembly. Thanks for responding.
Sounds like it could be the wiring. Another possible issue to check out is on what side the ground tang is on. For some reason, when my rally gauge was rebuilt the ground tang was put on the left side which prevented the rally gauge from working. Once I took out the rally gauge and switched the ground tang to the right side all the gauges worked properly.
>>Hi Lee, Sorry, I didn't. But if you look at the third pic down on George's article here you will see where the ground tang should be - mine was put on the opposite side when it was rebuilt which caused me the problems until I switched it back: http://www.buickperformance.com/rallygage.htm
Steve I am exactly where you are at with temp gauge not working. I also installed a new temp sending unit for the factory gauge and wiring harness and it doesn't work. For safety reason I also installed AutoMeter temp so I know exactly what the water temp is on the new motor. I hope someone can shed some light here. Steve forgive me for jumping on your thread. George
i could be wrong here, but i believe that the sending switch has to grounded to the block which could very mean that the teflon tape is interfering with the grounding. i used (iron) pipe thread sealer on my sending switch with no problems.
My Temp. gauge quit working also. There were no changes to the car. I replaced the sending unit and it still does not work. Thinking about adding one in the A Pillar pod setup and include a A/F Ratio Gauge too.Peace, Mike D.
Gerry Yes I used teflon tape on the temp sending unit. Can the sending unit be removed without draining the antifreeze? George
steve, george; chances are the circuit board is smoked. ckeck with timr on this site as i believe he had his original gauges rebuilt. george u can remove the the temp senging unit without lowering the anti-freeze. just have a good clean rag to plug the hole. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- my gs did not have the gauges. i installed a set of autometers - oil pressure, temp, voltage.
This place is so COOL i learn stuff just by reading and my 15 year old son is EATING this stuff like crazy. LOVE IT keep it up! :eek2:
