I have the Factory 4spd in my Car, its a muncie close ratio im told. The car origanaly came with a 350, im going to swap it out for a 455 that will be a 494 stroker. Will i be able to use this same tranny for my car. Maybe diffrent clutch and what not but will the tranny hold up to the engine or will i hafta buy a brand new tranny?
I'm not sure, but I think the Muncie M-22 (Rock Crusher)was used for the 455. It's a stronger tranny.
Alright, i might go with a new tranny in the Car b/c the 350 i have in there and the tranny are numbers matching. Im not a numbers nuts but they will be nice to have around
I would save your engine tranny combo too. Check out www.m-22.com you can get a brand new rock crusher made with new state of the art parts that is suppose to handle the torque and HP.
You might as well get a Liberty or D&D T-56 if you are going new. They will hold up to 800 HP and will give you a double overdrive 6-speed. It is nice to cruise at 75 mph at 2250 rpm and still have a 4.10 rear gear. Cheryl
The good news is you have choices. will your existing trans last with a slicks and 3000RPM launches, not for long. Will it last for resonable street duty with street tires, yes with caution. For a direct bolt in the improvments to the Muncie (new gears, housing, midplate) make it a very strong but pricey piece. Their are several other manual alternatives that require a bit more work but is still very dooable for near the same trans cost with some additional cost of fab work and a new shifter. I do beleive most BBB work best with the wide ratio trans. This would be a M22W and with the other trans you have ratio options.
Transmission upgrade Jake Check out www.5speeds.com they have a upgraded case, iron mid-plate and ugraded internals to handle additional torque and horsepower. I put together one of these units and put it behind my 470 cu in/520 hp/550 tq BBB and it handles anything that I have put it through :3gears: They also have an option where 4th gear is overdriven. With the limited dragstrip duty my car sees I wish I would have put that in there. If you are looking to build a stroker motor give Geof Ketchum or Bobb Makley at Finishline Motorsports in Hastings a call. They do great work and both of them run 470/494 BBB motors in their drag cars.
