Hi folks, I am trying to find the engine serial number for registration purposes here. I have found the engine ID number on my 68 Wildcat 430 coupe.... on the left side of the block on metal boss under the two rear plugs. It reads ''PD 132" so it is the original motor. However the Buick parts/identification book I have here (which was spot-on for finding the engine ID) says the engine's actual serial number should be on the other side of the block, under the two rear plugs on the right side. But......no number there. Could it be somewhere else?? Also, would the original VIN plate have been on the firewall? The original rusted firewall has been replaced on my Wildcat, and the only VIN visible is a seemingly correct 68 Wildcat VIN put on an LPG conversion plate circa 2007...but not good enough for rego. I can get a substitute VIN from the registration authority, but I just want to check where the original would have been, in case it is still on the car. It's certainly not easily visible. Thanks
Try looking at the front of the block, on the left hand side, right above plug no. 1 - that should be the location for '68 430 engines. The vehicle VIN number was usually located on a metal strip in the upper dash, that was also visible through the windshield. Located on the left side (...driver's side), here in North America - not sure about down under? o No:
^^^^^ Thank you, sir! Dead right as usual........the VIN was on top of the dash viewable through the windshield, and the engine number on a boss just under the front two plugs on the left side. The engine ID code on the same boss under the rear left plugs. Armed with that knowledge, took the car in, it passed state inspection, and is now a damn-near daily driver... I have racked up 500 miles in the Wildcat this lovely spring week, and me and the kids (12 and 15) are absolutely loving it! But thank the Lord for LPG....it's very affordable to run, with LPG at exactly 50% of gasoline prices here in the state of Victoria. Cheers
We're looking at 7-8 months here before it's even warm enough to assume "spring" has arrived, that's why I own 2 convertibles; - nothing like having 5 tons of useless furniture laying around holding the garage floor down for most of the year.
