Where would I find the vin stamped on a 455 (maybe 1972) as well as a block code?
    Thanks in advance!!

Usually find the serial high on the block, just below the driver's side head.
Usually need to remove power steering pump & brackets so you can scrape the grease & grime away enough to see it.
Engine code is on the deck, drivers side between spark plugs # 5 & #7. Flat spot just below the bolt head.

    # location

Can be on either side of the block. (front)

On my '72 block, it was on the passenger side, front of the block, stamped into the machined surface that the front cover bolts to, right beside the block water inlet. I looked and looked, and only found it once we removed the cover and really cleaned.

Unfortunately, this block has been decked (who knows how much), so the engine code is long gone.

    Wow!

Never heard of one stamped behind the timing cover. :TU: That is good to know, evidently you almost need to have the block apart and cleaned before you really know...

It was really hidden. It wasn't *actually* behind the cover, just right beside it, and stamped so faintly that you couldn't see it until we cleared the whole area and wiped it down with solvent. A lot.

And after all that, it only tells the year (which the casting numbers tell), assembly plant, and the plant sequence number (the # of the car, last 6 digits of the VIN), which doesn't tell you what kind of car, or which version engine. Oh, well.
