I cant remember the answer to this simple question but: sometime when I turn the engine off sometimes it keeps running before spluttering to a halt, most of the time it stops instantly though. I believe this is a bad thing but I cant remember what causes it... also on starting occasionaly I get white smoke coming from one exhaust. It goes away after a few seconds so I guess its not a problme, I just wondered because its only coming from one exhaust whether it might indicate problems coming in the future...
Start with checking the dwell if it is a points dist . , timing and carb . idle speed . Then see what happens . :Smarty: :TU:
Sometimes higher octane can cure that problem. White smoke isn't great, but normal steam is okay. When you shut of the engine, water condenses from the exhaust and it blows out when it gets hot again (water is a normal by-product from combustion). -Bob Cunningham
Check the vacuum pull-off devices on the carb.. Had the same problem with my '71 350-4V, caused by the primary pull off.....well....not pulling off anymore. Plates weren't closing. $20 part cured the problem. P/N was Blueline CPA67.
Most likely timing and or idle speed. too much fuel at idle will cause it to not want to stop running.
When that happens it is called "dieseling"..........due to too high idle speed. It is caused when a red hot speck of carbon ignites the fuel mixture after the spark is no longer present. That's why some motors have that idle solenoid, it closes the throttle completely when the key is turned off. If your car has one of those, it is likely out of adjustment. Try shutting her down in drive (if you have an automatic) until you can fix it. :bglasses:
If you have an electric fan it can be charging the ignition system as its slowing down after shut off.
geese, I aint gonna type it all out a 2d time. I have had both of the two above me, make my Buick run on like that.
also on starting occasionaly I get white smoke coming from one exhaust I have thats problem whit my riv . what could be my problem too high idle ? too advanced timing ? Thanks
Could just be a leaky exhaust valve seal or two. Why it does't happen all the time. Its some what common. Only worry if it does it all the time.
