Can the greensih-blueish color of my 63 401 be found in a spray can? My local AutoZone has something called "Buick Blue", but it isn't even close. What exactly is the name of that color, and do they make it in a spray can? Thanks!
Years ago, I used Onan generator green spray can paint on a 401 nailhead and you couldn't tell the difference! This was before anyone had Buick Green available in spray cans.
It was at a Tampa diesel sales place that also sold and serviced Onan generators. I guess that some of the bigger RV places might have the paint available.
Seargeant Major- Do you you remember what brand you got from CARS (oldbuickparts.com)? I bought mine from classicbuicks. On their website it shows VHT, but what I got was Duplicolor. At first I was dissapointed, but after using it and seeing it, I am very pleased with the shade and the quality of the paint. It looks like they have all of Buicks colors you would want at a decent price. http://classicbuicks.com/paint&.htm Take your pick: Depending on where you live that is closer to you for time and shipping as this stuff has to be shipped "ground". CARS- East Coast ClassicBuicks- West Coast Do you like the color in the photos and videos on my engine on the dyno? Erik
I bought some "Buick green" from classic buicks a couple of months ago. When I peeled their label off the cap, the product was called Ford Green - most definately not a good color. I've found that Alpine Green is very close. It's in rattle cans from Tempo, Krylon, and Dupli-color. One of the best sources is John Hirsch - google his name along with engine paint. Here's a new one that should be good. Two Buick greens, for for the early straight 8's, the other for 53-66. http://www.por15.com/prodinfo.asp?grp=EE&dept=7 Ed
I have never had good luck with engine paint from a spray can looking good. It never seems to hold the gloss very long. Usually I have an automotive paint supplier mix up single stage enamel and I add half the hardener specified (the engine heat hardens the paint pretty well). On my nailhead last summer I couldn't find a paint code for that was close so I used the POR-15 Buick Green with just a little "wet look" hardener and I was really impressed. It still looks nice 9 months later. You can use a cheap hobby sprayer from a craft store or harbour freight.
Try Bill Hirsch hirschbill@aol.com http://www.hirschauto.com/prodinfo.asp?number=EEA-SPRAY Quick shipping too! Yards used his paint on my Wildcat engine and it looks awesome! It's been on a year and still looks great.
I used POR 15 , Buick Green engine paint kit . Applied with a Brush ....allows even coat in nooks and crannies... results spectacular... super high gloss, dries hard as a rock. Highly recommended. Paul
That does look good, Doug. I got mine from Bill Hirsch, both spray and brush. It ain't cheap, but works and looks good.
I use the "alpine green" in the spray can as well as a quicky, and it works good, and is really close. You can get it at most of your local auto part stores...at least in CA. I like the POR-15 idea and am going to try that next time, but the rattle can has worked for the past 2 years...
