Engine color in '73

    They didn't paint 455s blue in '73, did they?

    75 and 76 ....I thought 74 was last red painted one

    Rob is right, 73 and 74 engines were still red. 1975 engines were painted metallic blue (not the same as Pontiac and Olds engines) and it changed again in 1976. I dont know if it was a mid year change or not but the 455 in my 76 Electra was painted a lighter blue that was found on most 1977 engines from other divisions too (corporate blue).

    Thanks. I didn't think so. The motor in the Electra is blue, but does have '73 stamped heads. So, unless somebody pulled it just to paint, which would seem weird for this car, or it has been rebuilt before and just painted blue... or even better, a late replacement block. :) When I get it out, I'll check the numbering on the block.
