Does anyone use an electric winch on their trailer, I think I need to get one?

Friend of mine has one on his. I think its rated for 4500 lbs. He had a little trouble hauling my 79 Merc wagon on his trailer. If he had a snatch block he wouldn't of had a problem.

Something to think about when looking for a winch is to get one that is rated minimum 1 1/2 times the load that it is going to be pulling. the ratings are for a straight pull on level ground. As soon as you start to go up an incline you increase the load on the winch. Also, make sure that the cable (wire rope) is up to snuff as well. Some winches are coming with a synthetic cable now but I don't know to much about these.

And as always SAFTEY is an issue when using a winch. Never stand directly in line of the cable and its not a bad idea to drape something over the cable while in use. If it were to break, the weight of whatever you drape over the cable (coat, towel, etc...., you can even get bags made to do this from winch manuf.) will help force the cable to the ground as well as slow down the recoil. DO NOT stand in a direct line of the cable either (stand 90* off to the side) If a cable breaks and it were to hit you it could cause some SERIOUS injuries, even death.

Even though you are pulling a racecar onto a trailer and not trying to pull a huge 4x4 out of a mud hole these kind of things can and do happen.

Also do not rely on the winch as a tie down or a "saftey chain". The gears can strip or the winch (cluth) itself can freewheel even if it is engaged.

    Just some food for thought.

I have a SuperWinch rated at 3500lbs. But like Eric stated, it will pull on level ground fine but up a trailer... no dice. I added pulleys to increase the pulling capacity, and that helped a little but I still need about 3 friends to get my GS up on the trailer.
I should have bought a better winch.

I have the SuperWinch S4500 on my trailer. I run it with dual batteries for a lot of 12v. I have no trouble pulling full size cars up on the trailer & I have a little steeper ramps than average. When necessary I can pulley block it to go to 9000lbs, but I've never needed to do it just to load a car.

I just put a Superwinch S4500 in my trailer 2 weeks ago. Really just got to use it for the first time last weekend in Norwalk. No problems at all. I was going to get the S4000 but it was only like $20 to upgrade. Sometime in the future I'll get one of the remote switches.
