Just thought I would let you members know of a scam someone used on one of my customers. I sell on ebay occasionally. Well I sold something last month for $2,100. The sale went well and I was paid promptly. I shipped it right out and the buyer was happy with his purchase and left positive feedback. In the meantime someone contacted another interested party via email and represented himself as me and stated the high bidder declined to purchase the item. If he was still interested he could wire the money to a bank account and they would ship it right out. Needless to say he never got it and started to send me threatening emails. He is now out $2,000 and last I heard he was trying to contact the police to see what he could do. So make sure you know who you are dealing with.

It's scary, but someone could pull this scam the other way too. Claim that the part had been sold and demand a refund. There are people who would try to "settle"...

this shows one of the good things about private auctions, in private auctions, nobody can contact the bidders except the real seller.

this is one of the reasons ebay advises people to never enter into a transaction outside of ebay.

john, i hope the person who got scammed stops hounding you, you are a victim just like they are, except they are the ones out $2k.

i wonder if the scammers are so slick now that they made up a fake second chance offer page so it would look like a deal done thru ebay. the scammers get people to enter their id & passwords with their spoof emails, so i wouldnt be surprised if they have moved on to fake second chance offer pages.

it seems to me that ebay could easily prevent members who arent involved in a transaction with one another from contacting each other without having to use only private auctions. many people fear private auctions because it can be a haven for shillers, but this illustrates one of the ways in which private auctions can protect bidders.

How about a guy who won the ebay bid and wired 38K for a Hurst Olds. The problem came when the pic was just one taken off the internet and the alleged for sale car did not exist. So far he has no car and no 38K.

We got a email claiming to be from ebay saying something about someone making fake bids on our account and wanted us to verify the account. If it realy was ebay and new about fake bids on our account then why do we need to verify our account? Looked like a bunch of BS to me so I did not respond. Tom
