Hey guys do we have a heating/cooling section? I couldn't find it?

Anyway I found this one on Ebay, and was wondering if it's been talked about. My car is all stock, and I like to keep it that way. I currently have the original 2 core radiator that has been cleaned/boiled with a couple tubes pinched off.

I'm not sure what the bigger engine or heavy duty cooling system options were for my year, but I would like to upgrade. I have no shroud, and the stock four blade fan. It runs a little warm in the summer time, but not bad. I would like to ad AC at a later date.

If you guys know what the heavy duty cooling system was for my year. Clue me in!

For the money Champion makes a good product but by no means does it retain the original look. If you want the original look I know Griffin makes a number of OEM style radiators. Of course they are quite a bit more in cost. You really need to run a fan shroud on your car and when properly installed the fan blade should be half way in the shroud half out. Here is a very good article that can shed some light on the subject. Good Luck with your project.

Thanks! I'll check it out. I don't believe my car came with a shroud. Pre shroud days of vehicles had the fan closer to the radiator.

If the 401 Electra had a shroud then I would search for one, and run the OE heavy duty cooling system. That's the goal anyway. Doesn't have to be exact, but resemble stock.

My 57 Buick has a fan shroud an all my Chevys came with fan shrouds. Can't believe that your car did not. As a matter of fact I think this is what it looks like as I believe this is a shroud I have from 61 Buick.

WOW! Very cool! I'll have to get off my lazy a$$, and look at my assembly manual!

Do you know if the 61 had a 3 core rad option?

Mine didn't have a shroud either and I replaced my original radiator with one from Champion. Fits pretty good, but had to make a few changes.

Thanks, yea my car is pretty stock. I didn't see any signs that it had a shroud, but maybe.

    :blast:

Thanks...I didn't really want aluminum unless the price wa right. Car doesn't overheat. Really would like to optimize the stock system and upgrade to the HD system if one existed.

The 61 LeSabre did not come with a shroud, just the plate on top the radiator
It is possible to take a shround from a late 60s Skylark and modify it and it will fit nicely. I did it on a Wildcat and it worked great. Also see if you can find the pulley system from a Nailhead A/C car. They were designed smaller to allow the fan blades to turn faster and provide better cooling, especially at slow speeds. You can also go to a later fan blade with more blades for better cooling.
Make sure you have the proper fan blade spacer on your car, to keep the fan blade close to the radiator. IIRC, they should be no more than an inch apart

Just went out and looked at mine, about 1.5 or 1.75 inches from fan to radiator, but in all fairness, I think the Champion radiator is a bit thinner than the original. Good tip about the A/C car pulley system, I didn't know there was a difference. I suppose it would also change the belt size as well? Also is there change in the alignment? I'm thinking there may be from my experiments.

Some great info! Thanks! I'll be looking for parts to adapt the later fan blade, shroud, and pulleys.

Hey mark do you know how to ID the ac pulleys? Would they be double groove? Have a part number? Also what's the rule of thumb for fan blade depth in a shroud? I might have to play around with different size spaces.
