What color is the starter supposed to be on a '65 GS?
I just took mine apart and cleaned it up and it has black paint on all the pieces. I was expecting it to be the same Buick green color as the engine. Is it supposed to be black, or has this on just been replaced at some point with a rebuilt one that was painted black?

Come on now--someone has to know this. Is your starter black, or the color of the engine? I have mine on the bench ready to paint as soon as I know the answer.

Good question, The two starters I have , one on a gs 401(red engine) , and the other on a wildcat engine (green engine). both starters are black.

Any GM starter that I have seen has always been black. I painted mine semi gloss black when I did my motor the last time. Black should be correct.:bglasses:

Sounds like black is the answer. The one I have had black paint left on it once I cleaned all the crud off of it.
The reason I asked is because the starters on the '64-'67 225 V6, 300 and 340 V8's were painted the same color as the engine. My '66 Skylark and '65 Special both came with the starter painted Buick green and my '64 Skylark had it painted silver like the rest of the engine.
