Take a good look at the exhaust ports guys... that is what they should look like, if the carb is not too lean.. no burned paint. I rolled the motor back in my final assembly room tonight to take these pics.. so this motor has been run.. JW PS.. Yes, that is a GSX stripe painted on the walls... :TU: I figured it would be good "karma"..
And that is what will be sleeping in MY garage tonight! And if my wife finds out what this really cost, I will be joining it! Brian
JW, That is one beautiful looking engine. I'd love to open the hood and see that sitting in there. Some very impressive numbers from an iron headed motor. Now I'm starting to get anxious for mine!!! Brett Schmahl
Cool Brian! You are going to love that thing. I was able to sneak in a short test drive in mine between snowfalls a month or so ago. I still had the drag radials on mine, and granted it was a cold day, maybe 20* or so but, it wanted to melt those tires everytime you thought about hitting the gas:laugh: I think it is pretty clear that Jim is on to something. My engine dyno'ed 485/550 with just a little less cam and a performer intake with less carb. Brians results are about exactly what I would have expected. Consitency in the numbers like that, and the wide flat torque curves tell me that these things are being built RIGHT. :beer The snow is melting again today but, not nearly fast enough anymore. We need some sunshine and dry roads:3gears:
got the motor yesterday afternoon! Thanks to Jim for his excellent work and detail and to Tim for having to ride all the way down and back with Jim!! i will be starting the install as soon as I get off the computer. Maybe I should start a pool for guessing how long my brand new BFG T/A's last. My guess is not very long! Brian
Pick Me Pick Me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jim, Who's next on the big list??????????? Brian glad to hear you got your motor. I have seen it several times at Jims shop. Jim pounded out the pistons and said just think when its all cleaned up it will look like that. (As he pointed to your motor after it was cleaned up) This is what mine was like!!!!!!!!!!
Yikes! Did Jim tell you how bad mine was, Ed? It was a fresh motor that a local shop built and boy was it messed up! Jim had to pound out the cam thru the back plug with a mallet. He said it was the wost case of cam bearing meltdown he had ever seen! Plus all the machine work was fubar! I am surprised it didn't send him to the funny farm, it was a mess..... Brian
Problem Child Brian, I do know that he did refer to it as the problem child a few times. Looks like he corrected all the problems from the looks of the dyno numbers. Looks Great Brian. Now get that work of art installed!!!!
Ed, Yours, along with a host of others, is in the machine shop right now. I have 3 motors with all the machining done in assembly right now at the shop here. Should be later this spring. JW
Yeah that fuel pump is one sweet item! Looks great and Jim says it will suck up gas like there's no tomorrow! Better for me than going with an electric pump. Plus i decided that anything that was on that motor, Jim should do. That way it is set up correctly. He said there is more to it than just slapping it on the block. It needs to be set up to ride on the cam correctly or there can be wear issues. Expensive yes, but worth the piece of mind. Jim is great to work with, he gave me suggestions on things to be done, but wasn't pushy or anything. Whatever he recommended, I had him do. I figured why take the chance and get cheap on something. If he thought it was a good idea, that was good enough for me! His skills will make the difference between a good running engine and a good running engine that will last and last with proper care. Brian
I was surprised to see all of the views on this post! Like Merrill Lynch, when Jim speaks, people listen!  Brian
