well yes and no. the 8.1 for example gm offered wasnt much worse than a diesel it made so much tq. that said gas will do the job if your only pulling it once every month of so. everyday yes diesel is what you want. once a month not so much.
if you take your 6.0 and delete the egr and add head studs you could run a hot as tune as the fuel and turbo will support. the egr is a good idea anyhow. its cheap 50 bucks or so but time consuming. studs be a little more like a grand.
One thing to consider is the fact that diesels hold their value much longer than a gas truck and are typically easier to sell.
8.1 was a good engine and it made good torque too. They don't make that anymore so it's 6.0 or Dmax. You are only giving your opinion about how often requires what. I will never pull a 16k fifth wheel with a gasser. I don't care if it's once a week or once a year.
I will clarify my thoughts. 8.1 had plenty of issues and it was a bastardized motor from the get go. But it was a good step between a 6.0 and a dmax. That's for sure.
I have an 8.1 in my Suburban. It's a reliable engine. It has about 65,XXX miles on it (dad bought it almost new). The advantage of an 8.1 is that you get a heavier duty tranny, 4L85E in the Suburban and Allison in the truck vs the 4L80E behind the 6.0. It also has the same core support and big radiator like the Duramax. Basically some of the mechanicals are beefed up above a 6.0 truck. Mine gets about 10-12 mpg if I'm towing or not. I towed my enclosed car trailer (9-10k lbs) through the smokey mountains and still got 8.9 mpg. The 6.0's mpg seem to fall off more with that kinda weight. That said I've owned a duramax and two 7.3's in the past and still prefer a diesel for towing but right now with gas "cheap" I can't justify the extra expense.
When you're ready to sell it, let me know. I've been looking without success for an 8.1 Suburban. It's the closest thing to my Excursion out there.
Brad, Use AutoTrader and KBB.com and search Texas...you should have no problem finding an 8.1 Suburban there.
Will do Brad. My dad bought it in 05/06 (it's a 2005) from the owner of the Chevrolet dealer. I'm not sure if it was ever titled in the dealers name or not but it's basically 1 owner and has every available option except the 4:10/locker rear axle. This truck has 3:73 gears.
I have an 05 LLY Duramax and yes they do have a few issues but all we do is work that truck. It will drag our 15K fiver up the side of a mountain all day long. I've had it since 09 and have driven it a 90 horse tune since day one with no problems.
Since you are so smart, this should be the easiest $500 you ever made....Prove that you can purchase a new 2015 F450 today with a cummins engine in it and I'll send you $500....and if you can't, pay me nothing but come on this board and appologize for not knowing what you are talking about.
Look I know its an option with the medium duty trucks. What is it only the 550? Oh boo-hoo. Still doesn't change the fact the 6.7 is a pile. Again, why would Ford even offer the cummins if the 6.7 wasn't junk? Instead of trying to insult me like a 12 year old, why not answer the question? Probably because you don't have an answer and acting like a child is all you have left...
You are correct about the medium duty trucks today and incorrect about the F550. For 2016, here is the medium truck announcement; http://www.ford.com/commercial-trucks/f650-f750/2016/ and as far as insulting you, not sure what you are referring to...the word ignorant means "lack of knowledge, uninformed" I am shocked though that someone in sales would treat potential customers like you do. But I am also sure if someone came on here and bad-mouthed Mac tools, you would have something to say about that. Have a nice day.
Allison trans option too. Lol Not too confident in their own stuff I guess. Although Allison probably has the market cornered for medium duty applications. Lots of busses, dump trucks etc.. use the allison.
Yeah, Allison pretty much has the market cornered on med duty autos. Doesn't have anything to do with Ford not being able to build one themselves, it obviously doesn't make financial sense for them to do so or they would because at the end of the day that's the only reason ANY auto mfg is in business for is to make money. The 6.7 powerstroke was designed specifically for the SD pick-up trucks. The V8 32v overhead design is more efficient than a straight six but the straight six is easier to service so in big trucks with big engines a straight six is easier to package and service. Ford has offered a cummins and Allison combo in their med duty trucks for as long as I can remember as do many other truck makers...
honestly the tq shift 5r110 holds alot more power than the alli 1000 does idk why people get a chubby over the allison. 120 hp efi tune and it will burn the clutches out in no time even hp less than that on a lbz. the 6.0 and 6.4 fords you can crank them full blast and the trans will hold up no problem. to the guys arguing over fords you honestly think cummins dont blow head gaskets its real common on 6.7 ctds they have to stud them with any power boost. lbz lmm lml duramaxes crack pistons all the time. llys over heat and blow head gaskets. lb7 the injectors die. they all have problems and its all for the most part due to emissions.
