Discussion in 'Got gears?' started by SAN DIEGO GS455, May 26, 2006.

  1. Anyone have advise on possible driveshaft upgrades, expecting to shorten

existing unit but would prefer not to since existing "shaft" fits th400/8.2.

any advise maybe G body shaft or X body, anyone know??? car is 70 455

conv with 700r4 with 8.2 axle.
    thanks

A 700R4 with an adapter plate behind Buick 455 is an odd swap, thus you'e not getting any responses. The 1st to 2nd gear spread is much worse w/ the 700R4 than the (easy to fit) 200R4, so few high torque BOP 455's are backed up by 700R4's. Have sold a ton of 700R4 & 200R4 cores, & been though half a dozen swaps. Dimensionally, the 700R4 is significantly longer than a short tail Turbo 400 (stock behind a 455 in a 70GS). Typically, a 700 R4 swap in a 2 door Chevelle will require a 2 1/2 to 2 3/4" shorter driveshaft than a shorttail T400. Tranny & tranny crossmember need to bolted in 1st before exact DS length is determined.

The 700R4's trans mount is also in a different spot & once installed, the swap will slightly alter the geometry of how the engine sits. Have ran into similiar geometry probs before, where a long tail T400 had been installed in one of my '71 A-body :af: Personally try & not make things difficult. Where there's a better option, & its affordable, I usually run with it. Might consider going 200R4, there's tons of 200R4 swap info in the archives. Hope this helps

Thank's for the advise, knew someone tried this with mixed results, feel i gave
it every opertunity to last with upgrades available but.... still have the th400 if things become bothersome. thanks again by the way... anyone attempting this swap some advise: you do not need to connect the tcc wiring up unless you plan on hooking it up to the brake switch. been given bad advise and burnt up an HEI due to grounding out the feed wire(yellow) to common 12vt source.

Just find a driveshaft shop and they can make custom lenght to your specs. Or beetr just drive in and let them measure it. New ones probably about $200

not to put you down but dont you think it will be kind of hard to drive his car in there to get measured when he doesnt have a driveshaft :Do No:   :eek2:

I see a flatbed in his future! With AAA it would be free as long as it is registered. :bglasses:
