Figured this would be the best place to ask this. How many of you are running 700R4's? or 2004R's? What are you folks doing for a driveshaft? Did you get it shortened, or is there any aftermarket available? First off, im doing the evil thing and putting a SBC into my buick......ou: For my own reasons. Now im "assuming" (maybe too much) that the spacing from the engine block and back, were the same in all 68-72 A-bodies. Meaning, they can all interchange transmissions (which i know is true). But can they interchange driveshafts??? If they can interchange driveshafts, it would prove that the spacing from the engine back is the same in all A-bodies, regardless of BOP/Chev engine. And 700R4/200R4 driveshaft knowledge would apply. Basically im trying to figure out if i can buy an aftermarket driveshaft for a 700R4 in an A-body with a SBC....... Any ideas? The driveline will be a SBC/T56. The T56 is the same length as the 700R4. Any help appreciated.
Just head on over to a drive shaft shop and have one made. That's what most of us do. They can tell you how to measure.
Im just being lazy about that, because they will probably want me to bring my car down, which is easier said than done.... ie: cost of renting a trailer and moving the car. If the v8 in the car is matched with frame pads, do the driveshafts change between companies? Like BBB with BBB frame pads drive shaft into a SBC with SBC frame pads driveshaft....
Sorry, but this isn't something you can order out of a catalog. If you go to a drive shaft shop, they will tell you how to measure the length. No need to bring the car down anywhere. You give them the yokes, and measurement, and they make you a shaft and balance it.
Oh i understand. I thought they would just shorten an existing driveshaft by cutting in a zig-zag pattern, and rewelding. So figured the difference in length between the TH400 and 700R4 would be that shortening. I guess this is themeasurements pictured? I wont have those till i swap the parts in a guess. Hmmm....
Yes, but I would visit the shop you want to use and ask them how they want you to measure. Some shops will differ slightly on that, just ask.
In my 67 Skylark, I went from a BOP 350 trans to a 700R4. I measures from the back of the trans mission to the yoke nut before and after swapping the transmissions, and I had to cut 3 inches out of my driveshaft. -Josh
I had mine made at a driveshaft shop. That's the best way to do it. They can tell you how to measure properly. I got a 4" steel unit. It's all but indestructible. They said if I break it, they'll replace it, no charge. It hasn't failed me yet.
Custom made. I supplied the front yoke, they made the shaft, changed the u-joints, and balanced it. This was about 5 years ago. I'm sure the prices have gone up a bit. One phone call will answer that question.
5 years ago, was relatively recent. Probably more expensive now, but probably not by much. They wont quote me over the phone, so im gona have to actually visit them. That wont happen for about a month because ill be burried in school work... But im feeling kinda optimistic about it now The shop is actually a transmission shop, but they do performance work as well. They are sponsors for the only drag strip close to the city. Ihad no idea what it SHOULD cost, but atleast i have some idea of what to work with. Thanks.
