Really bummed...At least I know now what exactly is messed up under there.

Center bearing is toast......I can move it by hand 1/4" in any direction with ease.

Anyone know where I can get a new center bearing for a 63 Special??
A guy from the Buick Compact club said an 89 Ford Bronco is a close match for this part. Anyone hear of that?

Here was my earlier thread regarding this. It has pics etc.

A good buddy of mine has a 63 Cutlass with the 2 piece shaft. Parts for that driveshaft he says are virtually impossible to find. The CV rebuild kits, hanger bearings and U joints are long discontinued. Hes been looking for parts for his a few years now. I know there are 2 different shafts...an early and a late. I believe the 63's shound have the late style. If you can get ahold of the factory part numbers, you can plug them into www.partsvoice.com. This website allows you to look up participating dealer and auto parts store inventories. He located a few CV kits years ago by this method. Good luck

I got all four joints about a month ago just havent got around to putting them in because it's an all day job to drop the whole ASS-embly to change the u-joints.

I'll click around there again but, I didnt see the bearing anywhere last time...

Just an idea: if it's just a ball bearing, call a bearings manufacturer and see if they make one that is the size you need. They make hundreds of different sizes for all kinds of applications, if you're lucky, they migh have it. Then it won't cost you more than a few bucks.

    Good luck

George, GM Obsolete parts list it as : Item#1029 Drive Shaft Center Support Bearing

As far as finding a generic bearing manufacturing company, that sounds like a good idea but where what and how? The only thing that is made in LA is silicon and hot air.....HELP!!!!

I know of a Swedish bearings manufacturer that is one of the largest in the world i think. SKF it's called, they make high grade stuff, I'm sure they're available somehow here in the states. When I was a kid, well about seven or what ever, I wanted a large iron ball. To use in playing with marbles. You know how you play other kids for their marbles, and you throw them around. At least in Sweden we did this... She got me a ball the the size of a billiard ball. She just called them up and ordered it. I still have it at home in Stockohlm, no one ever won that one from me.

95.00 for a good used center bearing is actually a good price. My buddy paid the same price a few years back. The 61-63s are great little cars, but the driveshafts are their downfall.

Yep. Stock it only lasted 41 years..lol

I'm hoping when I get the bearing and the new joints installed it will all be smooth and groovy for another 41 years.

Another thing with these cars is the wheels. 4 bolt rims 15x6. I managed to get some tires 195/70 but they rub in the front on sharp turning and the back I have to let all the air out to get them on and off and even then it's a pain.
