I have a 65 Buick Lesabre 300CI with the standard diff 3.08 ratio. The drivers side axle shaft broke today. Do anyone know where can I get another shaft from? Or will I have to replace the entire rear end?

The four bolts you see in the first picture hold the axle in. Take them out and see if you can get the axle out. Sometimes you have to use a slide hammer, but since there is nothing left to attach it to it may be hard to get out. You could weld a bolt to the axle so that you would have something to attach the slide hammer to, or you could drill and tap a hole. Either way it could be a real pain. Then you can count the splines on the axle. Next you will have to hit the junkyards or look on e-bay for an axle that will fit. May be easier to just look for a complete rear end.

Oh, by the way, how did you do that?

    Thanks for the replies..

As for how this happened. I guess just old age.. I was out for a Friday cruise and it broke as I was beginning to make a right hand turn from a stop sign. I am glad it didn't break while I was driving at a high rate of speed.

What would cause this & has this happened to anyone else?
And would it be safe just to go ahead and replace both axle shafts?

"65Lesabre" what transmission, engine, & diff ratio did your axles come from? Will is slide right into what I have? Also I don't know if it would be a good ideal to replace my axle shafts, with old axle shafts.. What if the same thing happens???

Someone in another forum said if I find out how many splines I have, I could then call Summit Racing and buy new hardened axle shafts from them. Can anyone confirm that I can do this?

    axles

    Brook..
I would have a tendency to believe that your axle was flawed from the
factory, unless the bearing froze & snap the axle.
How many miles do you have on your car?
My axles are out of a 65 lesabre that had a 3:08 set of gears (non-posi),
    300ci motor & 400 trans.
Be careful when ordering axle though... make sure you have proper axle
length spline count, bearing size & location, (bearings are pressed-on)
offset or housing flange-to-axle flange dimension & bolt pattern etc....
    Good luck.

I don't have a 400 Trans. Mine has the st300 trans. Would that matter? I bought this car last summer, I don't know how many miles are on the car exactly. When I purchased it the speedo cable was disconnected. How much are you asking for both rear drivers, & passengers axle shafts shipped to Texas?

    axles

    Brook...
You can have them for $40 plus shipping.
I'll have to check shipping costs... if this price is ok with you.

I am ok with that. It will come with the bearings already pressed on and the wheel studs? The fact that you have a diffrent trans than what I have, will that matter?

Also. How many miles are on your axles?

    axles

    Brook...
I think the axles have about 100,000 miles on them, if I'm not
    mistaken.
The axles will have the bearings, retaining plate & studs attached.
I don't think the st300 trans will make a difference, but
check the rear or axle flange and see if you can find any
    part numbers.
I will try and check tonite also.

Hello, I just sent you an email through the forum. I need those axles shafts pretty bad. I can pay now via paypal. The shipping address is in the email. Thanks.

You don't need to worry about buying aftermarket axle shafts unless you are racing the car and making alot of power. I agree with whomever said that the axle was flawed from the factory. The stock axles are plenty strong for normal driving.

The different transmission won't matter, just make sure the replacement axles have the correct number of splines.

    same thing happened to me

My drivers side rear axle snap exacly like yours infact I thought I was looking at my 1970 wildcat.I was wandering if you or any body could help me out.My 70 wildcat has a posi with 2.73 gears and I can not find a driver side rear axle for it.I also have a 70 Lesabre and thought I could use that rear axle in the Wildcat. That wouldn't work. The axle diameter was smaller.I would be even willing to swap for a newer posi, but don't know what will fix in my Wildcat or who to contact.Sure would be thankful for some advice or help finding parts.
    Thanks Craig.

65_Lesabre had the parts I needed. If he would not have had the parts, I would have had to have some custom made by Summit Racing.
