Does anyone offer a "Stock appearing" electronic voltage regulator?

Went to start my GS yesterday and the battery was stone dead.. After a process of elimination I found the voltage regulator to be energized when the battery is connected and the key in the off position. Taking the car to BBG for concourse next month and need to know if there is an electronic conversion offered in a stock appearing configuration? Before I have mine rebuilt I figured I'd review all my options. The stock appearing configuration also has the filter thats plugged into the regulator held in place by one of the mounting bolts. Need to make sure that stays. Suggestions?

Can you not put a stock cover on a new voltage regulator?

I was told it's availble out there somewhere, just trying to find out who has one availble and if it'll fit a correct appearing application. I would think someone involved in GM voltage regulators would have one.

I put my original cover on a 'Wells' brand regulator and it's been working fine. The cover lined up okay, I just had to drill new holes for the cover mounting screws.

    James/Dreeese,

Are these the electronic conversion regulators or stock replacements?

I'll check Parts Place and Ames and see what they offer, I'm sure this issue is covered already ...... somewhere..

The wells I used was an electronic replacement. With my cover on it, it looks original.

Sure you can, I've done it several times. In some of them all you have to do is drill out the rivets and put your old cap on with the original screws. On others the new caps are glued on but in that case all you have to do is drill the holes.

Wells p/n VR715, electronic, install stock GM cap. Auto Zone carries this one, NOT expensive.

If I remember correctly, the part # is VR715. As stated above, you can use your original cover on the electronic regulator. I've had one on my X for many years.

    Excellent, thanks!

I just checked the Auto Zone web site and they have the VR715 Voltage Regulator for $16.99. Someone on a Chebby web site suggested checking the regulator to ensure it works before walking out the door considering the sub standard parts coming off the shelves today. Not sure Auto Zone could test one in house. I'll need to modify it for the old style cover and it should be good to go.. No more dead batteries! :3gears:

Those transistorized regulators are pieces of crap made in China. Ask me how I know. Find the problem and use a stock type.

why not convert the insides of you alt to an internal regulator single wire style and leave the old regulator plugged in but have the wires not connected in the middle somewhere would look all original but work better???

I own just at 60 vintage cars, and all those with a GM remote regulator alternator have the VR715 installed, WITH NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER.

A very knowledgeable ignition person, that also does alternator conversions put me onto the Wells regulators, they just plain work well, no matter where they are made. NONE of mine say "Made in China".
