Front end veiw of skylarks gs's, because I have a slight problem with this 72 gs car I bought back in october, you see it has a 71 custom grill but I don't know if the chrome on hood is 72 or 71 the chrome piece on the hood is wide not narrow. I've tried to look at 71 & 72 gs cars but can't seem to find just the front view so that I can compare with what I have. I've been told that a 71 grill will not work with a 72 chrome strip on hood and that I need to change the light bezels too.
I allready bought a 72 front bumper ( this did not come with a bumper or brackets) and was hopping that it would work with this grill.
    Any help is greatly apreciated:TU:

These are the hood moldings. Note the 71 is much pointier while the 72 has a flat vertical face (making the car look lower in front).

Front (brown) is 71, rear (orange) is 72.

Hope that helps. You can probably see now why the 72 hood molding would be too low for the 71 grille, it sits lower and would interfere with a 71 style grille, which is taller than the 72 grille. Chrome style on the 71 and 72 headlight bezels is also different, and they won't line up properly with the hood molding if mixed....

    Hey Mike,

I think I've fallen out of "lust". It might be "love" and you know what that means...."till death do us part". :) By the way, I didn't know you were a golfer, so along with the fishing in you new home search out a good golf course. Fishing, golf and Buicks. Sounds like a trip to Mississippi to me!
    Cheers

    Thank you guys very much!!!!!!!!!

:TU: Your cars all look great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:( I'm looking at some pictures that I took before I pulled her apart, the light bezels look like 71's because they are chrome around the headlights with only paint on side touching the grill and the part that goes under the bumper. The hood chrome I can't tell much by looking at it, it actually looks like a72 piece. Tim if your there or anybody else can you give me the part # from the back of the chrome peice that goes on the hood? Now I guess the 71 and 72 gs hoods are the same?
Looks like I'll be shopping for a 72 grill, light bezels and hood chrome is there anything else, I aready have the bumper.
I tried asking for some of my money back for this car from the last owner :af: but thats what I get for not doing my homework first, I'm use to 69 rivs. not skylarks, oh well live and learn.

    No worries, gotta start somewhere!!!

70-72 GS hoods will interchange, but the 71 and 72 had a pop-up spring near the front, the 70 didn't. All parts will bolt up.

    71 hood front molding is p/n 1235002

72 hood front molding is 1239086 for the GS/base skylark. There was a slight variation for the Skylark custom which got the 1239087 part (taller chrome strip).

One other odd thing about the 72's, there are actually two versions of the 1239086, one is lighter and does not 'wrap around" the bottom edge of the hood. There is also a "light" and a "heavy" version of the 72 headlight bezels, even though they also share the same p/n. Different plants, I am guessing.

Anyway, hope that helps, I know it can get confusing.

I think if your GS is a 72, you would be best to try and find someone who will trade 72 parts for your 71's. Or buy what you need and try to sell the 71 stuff, if they are decent shape it won't take long. I have some 72 stuff here but I really don't know what kind of condition it is in or what quality you are looking for.

    Thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!

:ball: Man I really got burned on this deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For now the money is a little tight if some body would want to swap,I'm not looking a1 parts I would be happy to take pics and put them on here if anybody would be interested? From all the good info that you gave me Tim, now I look back at some pics that I took of car and she looks like a 71 with a stuck on gs on the grill, the vin code at least tells me that it is a true 72 gs 455.
    Jason your car looks great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think for now all I can hope for is the 72 bumper to fit. :Do No:

the main thing is that it is a real GS. You can always buy/upgrade/rechome parts later. 72 front bumper will fit fine, same as 71 except for the small rubber strip on it...in fact, some very early 72's didn't have that strip.

Use the for sale/parts wanted section and see about finding some 72 stuff for your car.
