    Hello everyone,
This thread will hopefully be one that will help myself and others learn(looking to probably have to lower my expectations for my nailhead:bla:), tell some stories(I love to hear them!), and maybe even poke a little bit of fun :Brow:. My question to all of the nailheaders on here is how well do your nails bite? Do you have no traction problems at all... only from a dead stop... at 60mph...??? Can you guys just "NAIL IT"(sorry I couldn't resist ) at any speed without any real worries or do you have to keep that lead foot i check :3gears:? Please also provide some basic information to your setup... gears... peg legs(hopefully not!)...tires... suspension mods... stuff like that. Thank you all for reading and posting!:TU: :beer

    Morning..

My Nailhead is almost stock, besides a 750cfm edelbrock and lighter springs/weights in the dist.. My backtires are some expensive sport tires sized 245/30-19 and I can floor it without that much wheelspin.. With the M/S whitewalls it would just make smoke..

In my stock 65 Gran Sport - Auto, 3950 lbs and 3.23's, stock tires - I can set it up to do either....

With full air pressure in the rear tires, low stall, airbags at 20 lbs/rear in the air I can break both tires loose for 20 ft from a 10 mph roll. Shocking the tires from a dead stop would get me nothing but smoke.

Set up for racing - 90/10's, loose front end, low rear and on the track with heated rear tires at 23 lbs, I can brake torque the car over 2000 rpm and launch as hard as I want, no spin. so far it has pulled a 2.10 60 ft time with that set up. Hoping to break into the 2.0's this year.

Hi Matt, I see your thinking like sean with the 9 second pass :eek2:. I don't know if you seen this older thread but its awesome. Search " rejoice nailhead and turbo" its in the new tech old iron section. I think He made over 400 hp and who knows how much tq at 2700 rpm and broke his 350 turbo:eek2:. Would be a good place to learn what he did.

My '62 has a 401 with an 850cfm Holley DP, ported intake and exhaust manifolds, Thumpr cam, cleaned up heads, and ram air (cold air source + sealed air box). It's got a ST400 with a V6 ST300 converter, that stalls close to 3k in high stall. It also has a 3.23 posi, and 255/60 tires. From a stop, it'll obliterate tires and get sideways. From a 10mph roll, it'll spin a little. But from 20mph on up it squats, hooks, and goes. My only suspension mods are an Addco rear sway bar, and stiff F150 rear shocks. Front shocks are meant for a Riv, and honestly feel very drag shockish.

Is that the Invincta??? over in Europe that broke the case of the transmission on the portable dyno or another?

I had a 65 skylark gs with 425 .040 bore 11:1 dual 600 cfm carbs th400 s.p. trans 410 gears and the car has a/c on it. raced on streets but could brake the 275/60 15 loose at 60 miles an hour when I stabbed it and pulled it to 2nd gear on a cool night. I didn't know crap about tunning then. I beet plenty of 12.60 cars buy 2 lenghts. I beet the crap out of that set up. my friend still has the car and set up. I did all this 15+ years ago. he has since put electronic ignition in it and put more streetible gears in it. we need to retune carbs. oh yea it has the old poston nh600 cam in it. motor has 3 sleeves in it as well. nothing wrong with sleeves because deisels run them and they are 13:1 I put a nitrous kit on it but never hit it. he has also put some ported head on it. I'm going to help him get it done because I want it to run 11's on motor. oh yea the car pulled daylight under left front with some cheater tires, they were american racers. had to heat the hell out of them they did work. I kinda miss those days. Have kids now and a career that requires a clean driving record. but that is another story.

He ran a single turbo 70 or 75mm with a big exhaust housing and a smaller compressor ar housing. It was over 800 ft tq and it was a sp400 he split. We started talking 3 or 4 years ago because we were both building turbocharged nailheads with one other guy was doing one in conn. The guy from conn hurt the motor but than sold it. The headers he made where black pipe and real rat rodish. The guy in Sweden used stock manifolds and looped them together and back up to a t6 flange. I fabricated my headers with 1/2 flanges and 1 5/8 primaries. All of our setups where different but 2 out of 3 broke transmission bellhousings. I have pictures of the before and after we welded 3/16 plates to the top of the transmission bellhousing to keep it together.

My setup is a Ross forged pistons, ARP studs and bolts, all the goodies.. msd ignition , 6btm box, 4150 CSU built carb, ev hat, tial BOV and 44mm wastegate, -10an feed and return lines, a1000 fuel pump. Their is so much to running a turbo on a nailhead than just the getting it to bolt up.. getting it to work and keep the motor together is the hard part. I will be pushing it to 15psi but it is at 7psi as we speak. I run a Quick performance 9" with gm big bearings. Corvette c5 brakes all four corners, Ridetech Shockwaves, DSE swaybars and a bunch of other goodies. I took the car out the other night with 5 psi and 30* timing locked in and 11:0 a/f (pig rich) it got sketchy at boost coming in. Power wise .. it makes a lot and haven't run it at the track or the dyno and this week hoping to finish getting it dialed in on the street and than bring it to the dyno once I trust the car alittle more. only 150 miles on it.

You can make all the power you want .. power =$$$

Mine is stock that i know with exception of the 600cfm Edelbrock carb and the dizzy has been switched to electronic. Pulling out in the road and hitting it just results in a smoke show and sometimes some twisting around in the road. Sometimes it will break them loose at 10-15mph rolling but most of the time it just starts pulling. I am hoping to drop a 4L60e in it with some lower gears for better low end if i want it to hook up or for better smoke shows.

I put up a few videos so you can see different version on turbos and superchagers. single turbo rear mount was the first I did. I than went to a front mount 67mm and now a 75mm where it runs the best yet. their is two videos of the twin turbo nailhead with ebay turbos that went like a raped ape.. than their was strange bird which was a wild build that busted the crank snout and I havnt seen it running since but it could be alive again. Enjoy!!

here is a video of it just at idle before I put the exhaust on last week. Newest turbo and this is a single s475 borg warner.

moved rear mount up front, old turbo setup with 67mm

single turbo rear mount setup like sts .. first turbo setup I ran

Man that rat rod truck has some snort! Sure does make one think about a turbo, cheap to build, just time consuming.

I still need to install a master shutoff switch but besides that I am ready to go. It takes me three hours to get their and I don't get out of work til 3:00 so it wouldn't be worth it for me. I can do the 3rd on the sat. I am sure you get a lot more runs on a Friday.

With goals such as smoking AWD turbo cars you really should consider building a turbo setup. As shown in the Rat rod truck it does not have to cost a fortune to make serious power.

That said the AWD turbo cars are deadly when done properly and driven right. My Audi A4 has a 1.8 Litre engine, 5 speed, AWD, and it is pretty darn quick with a upgraded turbo, larger intercooler and more boost than stock.

Build your car how you want it, not to race a certain car... Heck there are people running 9 second quarter miles in all sorts of cars these days...

Here is an article I wrote with some info about turbocharging (click the pictures to enlarge and see full size):

I definately agree with you Sean. I just don't know if I'll be happy with a budget turbo build. I would love to be able to do my dream build now(wouldn't we all)... but I just don't think that's in the cards lol :bla:. I'm looking to do a fairly potent setup that works torwards everything I want in and on the car that will tide me over until I do a full out build. I have to do something fairly quickly because the 300 and St300 in my car now are kinda on their last legs. Would you be interested in talking with me one on one about doing a budget turbo setup?

Yes for sure, send me a pm with your e mail....

The only downside is its a chain reaction, more power, trans gets killed, fix that, bust the rear end, buy new tires over and over lol

I don't plan on killing the rear end ever(strange s60), and hopefully not the transmission. I do plan on many U-joints and LOTS of tires . Thank you very much Sean I will do that now.
