This is the place to check.:TU: http://www.knfilters.com Last time that I checked they didn't have them to fit my dual quad air cleaners, yet. :ball:
i checked on that site, but it lists the same for all 300 to 401 engines but that doent seem right cause those had smaller aircleaners. Thanks
Then yours might be the same size as mine.o No: I think that they may be intersted in manufacturing them since there seems to be a need for them.:Brow: I know mine fits a number of different GM high performance applications such as Chevy 409 2x4's, 348 tri-powers, cadilac 2x4's, ect. Their place isn't that far away from me. If I can get my hands on a decent one to bring them to copy then they may be willing to do it. My problem is that I have my original air cleaners shelved because I cant find filters for them at a reasonable price. I have to run those silly little aftermarket jobs. :af:
I have a few NOS A85C air cleaners for my GS's, and will lend one to K&N if they are going to produce them. I will want it back when they are finished.
An offer to K&N I have been in touch with K&N in Riverside, Ca. about this subject.:Comp: I am waiting for replies from their R&D people right now. I have offered up an original air cleaner housing and might need your filter when the time comes. Dan k ; send me a PM if you'd like me to forward you a copy of my correspondent to K&N. Thanx! I will keep you guys posted. :TU:
The last time that I had contact with K&N, they told me that they had one that would fit. I have yet to see one anywhere including their online catalog. uzzled: http://knfilters.com/
George, I'm just wondering, will you be using a stock air cleaner housing? The reason I ask is that a stock housing struggles to pull enough air to out flow a stock air filter let alone a K&N. I believe that there was a flow test performed on air cleaners and a stock air cleaner will struggle to flow 400cfm through that little snout. I just bought a chrome drop base and fitted a K&N filter (and K&N lid :Brow: ) to it. I like the unique sound it seems to make. Just thought I'd mention it as an alternative to trying to keep the "flow limited" stock housing.
Yea Vasili,i will be using the stock aircleaner,i really dont want to alter this car at all,its original mileage and stuff. Thanks
From page 111 of the Doug Roe book on Rochester Carburetors... Ok, so I exaggerated a little bit when I with the 400cfm comment but if I'd changed it 500cfm I still think it would be shocking enough. Mind you, these tests where conduscted by Holley in 1971 but the point it makes is still valid and interesting.
I wonder if we could use one of K&N's filters then top it off with their filtering lids somehow on our set-up eliminating the need for that rubber lip??
Air Filter Option I did the same as Bill some time ago. The restrictive original now sits safely on a shelf. The filter, base and top look nice and go well with my engine, but I only think they are made to fit the Q-jet and Holley carburetors. Attached is a picture of the K+N set-up in my 66 401 before the rebuild, and another of how it sits on the 425 engine in waiting. This won't help George, but it may be a good option fore some other Nailheaders! Cheryl
Air flow I'd like to add my two cents on the air flow issue with stock air cleaners. I had my 66 GS with dual quads dyno'ed two ( or was it three?) years ago and found that with the stock jetting, the A/F ratio was 13.4 with the stock, two snorkel, breather and stock filter. With two 6 inch by 3 inch breathers and K&N filters in place, the A/F ratio jumped to 17.5 (both numbers are approximate as I can't find the dyno sheet right now). Horsepower and torque were higher with the stock cleaner but that was just because it was way lean with the other set up. Once I fattened the jets from .092 to .098 in all four secondaries, A/F ratio was normal with the K&N's. Also, following that change, I picked up almost 3 tenth's in the quarter and almost 2 mph. I think there is a lot of wasted potential in dual quads when they aren't set up right. Tom
